chapter three

The first day back. Well, technically we arrived yesterday, but the only thing that happened was the feast and then straight to bed.

It was good to be back, but Voldemort is back and everyone knows it. It's getting to be a bit strange around here.

For example, Snape is teaching DADA instead of Potions, which really makes me upset. I was unable to take Potions this year because I didn't get a good enough O.W.L. grade. I was glad in the moment because I wouldn't have Snape, but now I still do.

I'm sitting at breakfast with Ron and Hermione when Professor McGonagall called for me to talk with her.

Apparently, since Slughorn is the Potions teacher now, I am able to take Potions even with my OWL grade.

I found my book that Slughorn lent to me and I see notes in it. Lots of notes. They're notes that help make potions, and even some spells I've never heard of are in this book, written in ink.

All through class, Draco was looking at me. I don't understand why he wants to meet up with me tonight. I really don't. I also don't understand why get got me a birthday gift.

However, in return I got him something for his birthday, which was in June. I just wanted to return the same act that he did to me.

---

We're sitting in the great hall, eating dinner. Again, Malfoy keeps looking at me. Staring. I shake it off and go back to eating.

"Harry, what do you think of a little bit of wizards chess when we get back to the common room?" Ron asks me. I shake my head, my mouth full of mashed potatoes.

"I am going to the library after dinner. Sorry Ron," I say.

"Ew, Harry, don't talk with your mouth full. Why are you going down to the library anyways? Classes just started. Can we come too then?" Hermione asks me.

"I kind of just wanted to be alone.." I trail off. Then it happens again.

I've been having these flashback type things that really ruin my day. They also make my scar hurt.
I look next to me, seeing Hermione give me sad eyes. Most of the flashbacks have been about Sirius or Cedric. Sometimes they're just about random bad things that have happened to me at Hogwarts.

This flashback was about Sirius. I said I wanted to be alone. I really don't. I mean, that's all I said all summer to everybody, is that I want to be alone. I really just want Sirius back. My only family.

My scar starts to hurt and I close my eyes. I feel Hermione's hand on mine and I lean my head on her shoulder, still keeping my eyes closed.

I wait until the throbbing in my head passes and the visions of Sirius being killed is out of my head. I'm really glad I have my friends there for me when things like this happen.

I open my eyes and see Malfoy staring at me again, this time his eyes filled slightly with worry and something else that I can't tell what it is. I stare back. I'm going to be talking to him very soon. It's going to be weird.

"You okay, Harry?" Ron asks. I nod my head and then get up and walk out of the Great Hall. I go to the spot the Malfoy told me to meet him. It's about 7:30.

I sit up against a tree and sigh. I really shouldn't be left alone in my own thoughts. I hope he gets here soon, surprisingly.

I hear footsteps and see a blonde walk up to me.

"Hey, Harry," He says.

"Malfoy," I say. I stand up and look at him. "So what do you want?" I ask. I didn't mean for it to sound rude or anything, but this is awkward and I want to know what he wants.

"I just wanted to talk," he said while looking at the ground. I nodded my head even though he didn't see me.

There's a moment of silence before I decided to speak up.

"Thank you. For the birthday present. You didn't have to do that," I say. He looks at me and then gives me a small smile.

"I wanted to though. Do you like it?" He asks. Now it's my turn to smile at him.

"Yeah. How did you know I had nightmares?" I ask, honestly wanting to know how he knew.

"I don't know. I just did."

I nodded and reached into my robe to find a small box. I decided that since he got me a birthday present, I needed to get one for him as well.

I take out the box and hand it to him.

"What is this?" He asks, kind of in a cute, innocent way, which is something I never thought I would think about Draco Malfoy.

"Happy late birthday, Malfoy," I say, watching him open it. There's a card inside that I wrote, just like Draco did.

Draco,
Happy birthday. This is for your nightmares. I know you have them too.

He takes out the letter to see a dreamcatcher, similar to the one he got me, only this one is red.

"Thank you. How did you know?" He asks. I shrug. I just kind of figured that he had nightmares. I bet he's around Voldemort all of the time, which would honestly suck.

"So, what do you want to do?" Draco asks. I get up so I'm level with him. Well, kind of. Draco has always been taller than me.

"I don't know, this was your idea," I say with a small laugh. His face lights up and he smiles. That is so strange. I've never really seen Draco smile. It's nice.

He starts walking away and I follow him. It's a little chilly out here, but I don't mind.

We start walking around the lake that only two years ago I had to dive in with so many different creatures down there. I get a slight shiver thinking of the memory. I didn't really like that whole situation.

"Are you cold?" Draco asks. He must have seen my shiver. I shake my head.

"No, I'm fine. Just thinking," I say. He nods.

There's a long pause of silence. I didn't exactly know how this night was going to go. Right now, it hasn't gone as bad as I thought it was going to be, but at the same time, it's kind of awkward. Neither of us know what to do or talk about.

"How was your summer?" He asks me. I shrug.

"It wasn't the best, but it wasn't the worst, I guess." I say. "What about you?"

Right as those words come out of my mouth, he cringes. I furrow my eyebrows, but he didn't see that.

"Can I maybe tell you later?" He says in a small voice. Right now, we've stopped walking and are just staring at each other.

"Of course," I say, almost in a whisper. He nods and starts walking away. Just like last time, I follow him. Again, there's a few minutes of silence.

Suddenly, I feel a hand grab my wrist. And I screamed.

"Oh my gosh, Potter, I've never seen a guy scream like a girl like you just did!" Draco says, laughing, after letting go of my wrist. I let the breath out that I didn't even notice I was holding. Ever since I knew for sure that Voldemort was back, I've been freaking out over the littlest of things.

I decide not to let that show, however. I just give him a pouty face, which makes him laugh even more. Oh my goodness, his laugh is so magical. It's like music to my ears, even though it shouldn't be.

"Anyways, I was going to ask if you wanted to go flying with me maybe?" He stutters.

"Flying? As in on a broom? Right now?"

He nods his head.

"Accio Firebolt"
