I ran away. Not a single person tried to stop me. Not Mom. Not Jason. Not Danielle. Not Darren. So I ran away.
Jason didn't stop me, he came with me.
"Are you sure you know what you're doing?"
"If I wasn't sure I wouldn't be doing it."
"Alright."
I don't know why he trusts me so much. I've never done anything to gain it. He saved my life once. I didn't even know him.
We end up outside the city. He looks back and searched for the monsters. He won't tell me what he saw. But I know. I can feel the path they leave behind.
We walk in silence, as always. We don't want to attract unwanted attention. What could two lone teenagers be up to outside the city? Nothing good.
Nobody goes outside the city. It's where he lives. They don't know that, of course, but we do. That's why we keep everyone in. Rumors go farther than you would think.
They've got a whole security system set up to prevent an outbreak of monsters. They think that will help. It won't, but they don't need to know that.
He is too powerful to be stopped by petty human defences. But they don't need to know that.
That's why we're here. Me and Jason and Darren and the rest. That's our purpose. That's why we were created. To prevent an outbreak. To prevent him from gaining power over the city.
It's all we have left.
I've never seen over the wall. Nobody has. Nobody knows what's out there. Today I found out. Nothing. Nothing and yet everything.
It's a wasteland. Jason's eyes are watching everything and the stench of the deceased fills the air. I fall to my knees, couging. I can't breathe. I can't move. Carcasses of creatures big and small litter the area. Birds feast on their flesh. Each dying to their own.
A line of trees is in the distance and maybe if we can make it there it will all be ok...
Or maybe that's the root of all this. What secrets do the trees hold?
I clench my teeth and hold myself tightly. I try to contain my sanity. I can't let it go. It's all I have left. It's all I have except Jason.
