I watched the dragons stalk the streets, puffing out smoke and their mechanical wings clattering loudly as they made their way around. Suddenly, there was a loud gong and the dragons all took off, flying back to the castle up on the hill where a cruel heartless ruler reigned. I knew there were still dragons lurking outside, they were in hiding and waiting for something to happen.
"Sarah!" Mother called. "I'm going out to get some milk and flour, I'll be back soon!"
"I'll get it mother," I said as I hiked up my skirts and walked down the stairs just as she opened the door.
"Are you sure? You know it is still dangerous out there,"
"Don't worry, I'll be fine," I was finally able to go outside and get some fresh air instead of being stuck in my room all day. The sun was starting to set so I quickly hurried off to Mr. Helkin's shop so I could get back before dark. Once I got there, I didn't find Mr. Helkin but I did find his son Garren. Garren and I were very good friends but he is one year older than me. Being seventeen, he mostly helped out his father so we didn't see each other's much.
"Hello Sarah," said Garren when he saw me.
"Hello! I need some flour and milk," I said picking up a gallon of milk. I noticed the flour wasn't where it usually is so I looked around but couldn't see any. "Where is the flour?"
"Oh, we just got some more flour in, I'll get it from the back. Look around for anything you like!" he said before disappearing through a door behind the counter. Walking around the shelves and tables of stuff, I made my way to the jewelry. There were different kinds of bracelets, necklaces, and earrings but only one seemed to catch my eye. It was an elegant dragon necklace. The chain was made of silver and there was a bright, glowing red jewel in the middle. I placed it over the counter just as Garren came back with a small bag of flour.
"I'd like this necklace too," I said showing it to him. I handed him the money and he gave me the flour. At the same time, Mr. Helkin walked out from a room nearby. "Hello Mr. Helkin. I was just leaving."
"Hello Sarah, how is your mother?" He asked
"She is doing well, Mr. Helkin," I replied while putting on the necklace. Mr. Heklin stared at me and muttered something under his breath.
"Is something wrong father?" Garren asked.
"No, no, I'm fine. Have a nice evening Sarah!" I waved good bye and walked out. The sun was now just barely visible and the necklace was brighter than ever. I took a short cut I used to take when I was younger and could sneak out of the house to play with some friends. The memory felt not long ago, but it has been over a year since things began to go wrong. I got to a familiar alley and was about to climb up the wall when I heard someone, or rather something, breathing heavily behind me.
I turned around and there was a huge dragon behind me. I had only seen them from my window but now that I could see one closer, they looked like magnificent dragons in bronze armor. The way the armor was forged was delicate and awing. It's plated man-made armor covered most of it's body, it's eyes and claws barely peeking out. Small beams of sunlight reflected off of it's bronze plates, making it glimmer in the dim alley. For a second, I admired the dragon but then realized, it was a dragon. I tried to not show my fear and I cautiously walked backwards while keeping one arm around the flour and milk and the other arm held out in front of me as if telling the dragon to stay.
Amazingly, the dragon laid down and kept staring at me curiosity in his eyes. I kept watching the dragon and didn't notice myself slowly walking closer until I touched the dragon's snout. The dragon closed it's eyes but stayed quiet and calm. The piece of armor protecting the snout was cool and smooth, like a polished marble floor. There were two holes specifically placed for it's nostrils and a spiral started on the tip of the snout. It swirled in a glorious, intricate, and delicate design ending just on it's forehead.
Amazing.
