The sun shone through curtains and into my eyes. Sitting up on my bed, I grabbed the brush off my nightstand and glided it through my hair. My natural ombre hair, went from brown at the top, to a fiery orange at the bottom. The brush glided easily through the straight strands that gradually turned wavey. Letting the hair fall next to my amber eyes, I continued to brush my hair until it was all knot free. I also put on the necklace I had recently gotten. It wasn't glowing anymore now but still just as beautiful.

It actually hasn't glowed since that night. I don't remember much of what happened after the dragon. The more I think about, the more it seems like a dream or something from a book.

Walking downstairs, mother was already frying eggs and bacon. She kept muttering something but it was too quiet to hear. Sitting down, she placed a plate of food down in front of me and smiled one of her happy smiles.

"Three more days till your 17th birthday! Are you excited?" she asked. I just gave a simple nod, not wanting to be rude as I ate my eggs. "We should do something fun today. How about we go to the market?"

Surprisingly the market is still full of people even with all the dragons. Sure, there are shops everywhere but the marketplace is the heart of shopping and trading here in Pettersville. We rarely go to the market though, mother is usually busy with her bakery and we only have enough money for what we need and a little extra to save up.

"Sure!" I quickly wolfed down the eggs and bacon, along with a glass of milk, before running upstairs to change into some different clothes.

Walking down the streets was difficult. We had to go into a store every now and then to dodge the dragons but we eventually made it to the market. The place was filled with people dashing from stand to stand. You could hear the voices of the men and women trying to barter. The stands were arranged so if you got an aerial view, you could see a letter "H".

The sun was high in the sky and a few clouds would block the sun at times. Though it was Autumn, it felt like summer with the all the heat.

A tall hill stood in the distance. Not as big as a mountain, but tall enough for everyone to see. On that hill sat a palace. The palace of the corrupted and greedy King Validor, who has ruled the kingdom, Taldin for the past 10 years. King Validor has broken many of the laws and has corrupted the royal court as well.

Pettersville was the captial of Taldin and the reason it was still populated is because the known world that we live in, Astaria, is all corrupted so it wouldn't make a difference wherever we lived. The best thing we could all do is live our lives and hope that something good will come.

"Here are some coins, buy whatever you want but spend them wisely. I need to buy a few things."

After giving me a few coins, mother hurried off. I put the coins in a pouch in my brown satchel and ran up to some stalls.

After what felt like half an hour of shopping, I ended up with a new brown leather journal and a few new ink quills. I was looking at all the jewelry made of emeralds, diamonds, silver, and rubies even though I didn't have enough money. The rubies were my favorite, maybe because it was my favorite color or because they were just absolutely beautiful.

Suddenly, mother ran up to me. I smiled at her but immediately became worried when I saw the frightened look on her face.

"We have to leave. Now," she said quickly and out of breath. I didn't have to ask because as soon as we were about to go, someone else ran into the market.

"Thalesington has been attacked by the dragons! The dragons are coming!"

As if on cue, dragons soared into the sky above, roaring as loud as they could be. People everywhere ran to safety as the tops of each stand set ablaze. There was something wrong. Somehow, the dragons were different from the one I had saw a few days ago.
