You haven’t spoken one word since you’ve gotten in the car. And that was and hour and a half ago. But neither has Niall. No one’s dared to go where no one was allowed. No one dared talk at the worst of times. The airport was two hours away from the house. Two long, dreaded hours. You kept hearing him take deep, prolonged breaths closing his eyes for a mere second. At times, you almost thought that this was hitting him harder than it was hitting you. He tapped his thumb impatiently on the steering wheel, staring straight ahead. You eased the silence with a gentle hand on his thigh. He suddenly looked down at your rested hand just staring at it for a few seconds. He then looked up to meet your eyes before looking away quickly.

“Niall—“

“—So you’ll take the car back right?” he cut you off not wanting to hear what you had to say. Because he knew it was going to be something that he didn’t want to hear. That you were going to say something along the lines of “I’ll miss you.” “We’ll see each other again, eventually.” “You’re going to have to move on…”

“Oh. Um. Yeah,” you said. It’s his Uncle Pat’s truck. An old crème, Toyota that could barely run on four wheels.

“Great,” he muttered under his breath. And that was it. That was it for the long car ride. The next half hour was full of silence. Just silence. Silent talk, silent driving, and your silent hand resting on his thigh.

“We’re here,” you heard him whisper switching the rusty stick shift to the park position. You looked out the window ahead of you seeing people unloading their bags, saying their goodbyes, and making their way into the passenger-only airport. You took a deep breath, tears already pricking your vulnerable eyes. It was the hardest thing to do. Trying to stop tears. You stared up at the ceiling, using every muscle to seize them. But you couldn’t. They came running down your face as looked over to Niall. You were a little shocked to see bitter tears of his own edging over his eyes. You squeezed your eyes shut, not wanting to see it. Not wanting to see Niall so sad. Because of you. You felt a pair of strong arms wrap themselves around you, they comforted you as you sobbed heavily against Niall. His shirt wasn’t doing a great job of muffling your loud cries. Your mouth parted as you let out blubbers of tears. You could almost taste his scent. The scent that drove you crazy. It was a mix between really good cologne and the zesty ocean. You breathed it in, trying to hold onto it. Trying to remember every last whiff of it. For it was your last.

“Don’t…” you spluttered, “…go.” You felt his palms stroking your hair, trying to keep you calm. Trying to hush your blaring cries.

“I-I’m so sorry Y/N,” he managed through his own internal protests, “I have to.” He pulled away from you unlatching the door, leaving the keys on the seat so he could get his bags. You ran out your door meeting him by the trunk. He roughly threw his hand across his face wiping away the streaming tears. He threw out his single suitcase onto the knobbly gravel, his arms once again enveloping you in the only right action. A hug.

“I love you so much,” you whispered against his swelling chest.

“I-“ he fought to continue, “-love you too.” His arms squeezed you tighter and tighter, barley leaving you any room to breathe. But you didn’t care. He quickly grabbed your face in one hasty motion kissing you hard. His lips were smashed against yours, as they hungrily kissed you. He lifted you to your tiptoes as he tried to deepen the kiss in anyway he could. Your fingers played with the tips of his hair, pulling on it slightly. Habit.

“I love you so much,” he repeated pulling away from the kiss that you missed already. You stood facing him, the tears rivering faster and faster. You stood your ground ready to collapse to the road at any moment. You stared into his despairing eyes once last time before he sealed it with one more chaste kiss. Your last.

“Bye Niall,” you said your eyes heavily drooping not able to let him leave.

“Bye Y/N,” he whispered as he picked up his thrown suitcase into his hand rolling it onto the airport’s sidewalk, “Bye.” You took one last look at him before he rolled over silently into the airport. You sprinted back to the front seat of the car slamming the door as hard as you could behind you. You let the bawls grow louder and louder, pounding on the inside of your head knowing that he was really gone. You screamed at the top of your lungs, beating your hands against the steering wheel. You took one last cry before starting up the car and driving back to the house.

You scampered across the sand focusing on one thing and one thing only, Niall. Your eyes fixated at the beach, running towards it as fast as your feet would take you. You let your slippers run off your feet, as your fingers failed to hold onto the car keys. You tore through the roughing sand beneath your feet. You raced towards the roaring waves. You didn’t stop once to notice the darkening sky above you.

You stopped right where the water receded and came in again. You stopped where you could go no further. You stopped where you had made so many memories with Niall. Your eyes were tired from crying, but they cried more anyways. The waves splashing against your wobbly knees made you go weak.

This is where everything has happened. This was the exact spot where you had met Niall for the first time. This is where everything changed.

You thought about everything that’s happened. How you met a guy, fell in love with him, and grown with him in just a few short months. You thought you’d never find anyone else after Liam. You thought your love life was over, for good. But then Niall showed up. He flipped your life around. For the better. You have never met someone so open with their feelings, someone so free, someone so magical. Niall was your sunshine on any rainy day. He was your one and only summer love and you would doanything to go back to the way things were.

A drip. Just a drip fell onto your hair. It was a dark, thick raindrop that led to more. Many, many more. You were soon showered in a downpour of heavy rain. You yelled out, your lonely voice drowned out by nothing but dense raindrops. The clouds were weeping with you. You’ve never felt so much loss before in your life. But standing out in the pouring rain, your hair becoming soggy and dragging, you feel the loss. You feel the biggest loss.

You didn’t know any other way to deal with it. So you fell to the ground, the hard sand piercing your knees in pain. You looked up at the thumping raindrops, looking for any sign of something. Your thoughts were easily flickered back to Niall where you were happy again. Where you were laughing, smiling, and right in his arms. Your angry fists pounded up, striking the sand with so much force. You could nearly taste the blood on your tongue as you punched the sand harder and harder. You bowed down on your knees yelling. Up above you a barely visible plane roared off in the distance. You used all your might to keep your mind from straying to the thought. The thought that that could be Niall, on that very plane.
