~ In which select letters are (re)read
a month after that summer
Dear Patch,
I can't believe this is the first time I'm writing a letter to you. I told you that it would be more romantic written by hand. Is it?
I don't know how to start it. I don't know what to say.
Hi?
As soon as I got home I talked to my dad. We worked out all the junk that was between us. It took a while and was a big pain. But I understand him much better now. I think he might actually be nice.
The other day I went to see my friend. The one that I put in the hospital? Yup. Bryan. I guess we're really friends. Good friends, the kind that forgive each other when one puts the other in the hospital. He's a really good guy.
I also talked to Dabria. It's in the past.
What else... Well, you should be happy to know that I cleaned my room almost as soon as I got home. No more bad boy stuff. I also started studying music again. To get a teacher, I got a job. I intern at my dad's work in the office. I'm mainly a page, running stuff to and from the copy room.
My thighs are solid now from having to use the stairs. At certain times of the day the elevator is too packed.
I'm hoping for a promotion to either the mail room (there isn't much work there) or an office as a personal assistant. Or even a PA's PA. Personal assitant's assistant?
Auntie told me that you're working now.
"She's so humble," Auntie said. "She could be at big concerts, but she's just doing a couple small gigs as a keyboardist here and there."
"I don't think that's her point." I found myself telling her. For some reason, I thought that your motive was to end up in a band. It's an entirely strange idea, but I really think that's what you're looking at.
Be careful. Love you,
Minna
the response a week later
Dear Minna,
I think I'm going to join a band! It's just a high school one, with a couple small gigs here and there, but all the guys are really nice and I've discovered an affinity for light rock!
Good for you and your family. I hope that all ends up well. Stay well, okay?
Love,
Patricia

Dear Patch,
I feel the teeniest bit sorry about your return letters. I understand that you aren't the best writer, a fact based upon your previous notes left to others, but it isn't a reason to be so... concise. Like seriously, I put a lot of thought into what I put into these things.
School is going well. The AP courses are pretty difficult. There's stats, music theory, and history. It's pretty okay, but there's another sophomore who's taking all advanced classes except for chemistry.
Yes, I'm trying to hang out with the smart crowd now. I never hang out with any of my old friends but Bryan. That's because after he got dumped by Dabria, he finally got serious about people, himself, and the future.
