We were confused. What does mother mean? She lets out a sigh. "I've been thinking for a long long time, and I have decided that you ought to know....." Mother was starting to scare me. What could be so bad, we couldn't know until we were so old? She looks at us with her warm gaze, but instead of the usual warm kind look, there was sadness, worry. "My pups, when you come of age, the farmers are selling you..." We yelp in protest. "Mummy, don't leave us!! We want to stay!!" My mother was different. She looked older now. "I am no longer as young as I used to be. The time is approaching fast. But your new owners will be able to feed you and love you just as I have..." A single tear slid down my mothers face. "There is something else.... but it is late, and I will have to tell you tomorrow. Goodnight, my precious pups."

Morning came. I knew we didn't have long. Mother gathered us and told us the truth. "My puppies...... I hate to tell you this... You have different fathers. This means you aren't sisters and brothers. I'm sorry." Footsteps sounded outside the kennel and we scarpered. The farmer grasped four puppies. They cried out to us but it was too late. We heard the rattle of the old ute engine and they were gone. My mother paced the yard, calling for her lost pups. But deep down, we all knew they would never return.
