Dear Heartbreaker,

The invention of texting became a widespread phenomena changing the means of communication permanently. No longer did people want to have face-to-face conversation or even dial a phone number. No, there's texting: simple, impersonal, efficient.

The perfect means of communication for a semi-shy freshman to contact a guy without seeming overly eager. Wait three days, text a casual greeting, and go from there.

Yes, Janna and I planned it all out while eating cookie dough ice cream and listening to Andy Grammar songs.

Even though it's been a while since that first text, i still cling to the memory of that first conversation and dare I say, date, that followed.

In case you need a refresher, here goes...

With nervous fingers poised about the send button, I sat on a stone bench situated in the middle of the courtyard lining the backside of the University Gardens.  I had a greeting typed out and hoping for a positive response.

Me: Hi Cole, it's Elise.

Cole: Elise, Elise who?

Cole: I met an Elise a few days ago, swapped numbers, then didn't hear from her again...😕

Me: 😔 Sorry, been busy with these things called college courses.

Cole: Might want to call someone and complain about that. How dare you have to attend classes every day and do homework on the weekends?

Me: 🙂 I know right. At least today was easy. Three classes and I was out by 12:30.

Cole: I wish. I have a night class starting in 20 minutes.

Me: Night classes suck! My intro. to psych is every Wednesday 6-8:30.

Cole: I'ld take that over this English course. Professor Dryer is pretty dry.

Me: Are you making puns?

Cole: Could be...any weekend plans?

Me: Nope. Don't have any wheels so I'm stuck on campus. You?

Cole: My roommate Kris and I are going to Beaufort to catch the new Adam Sandler movie.

Me: Love him! Happy Gilmore is still one of my favorite movies.

Cole: You want to come watch it with us? Maybe bring Janna too, Kris likes red heads.

Me: I'll talk with her when I get back. I'm hanging out in the courtyard right now.

Cole: Wish I was there too. This classroom smells like moldy bread and dirty gym socks.

Me: Thanks for that unpleasant visual.

Cole: Anytime darlin'

Me: Shouldn't you be paying attention to Beowulf or something old like that?

Cole: Much rather focus on someone from this century.

Me: Someone...? I guess I could go find a random stranger for you to chat with since someone will do.

Cole: Relax darlin', you're the only person running through my mind right now. In fact, I bet you're pretty tired from all that running.

Me: What, are you going to start throwing cheesy pick up lines at me now?

Cole: Would any work?

Me: Doubtful but feel free to wow me.

Cole: I'm not a photographer but I can picture us together.

Me: Lame but I'll give you a point for trying.

Cole: I bet you play soccer because you're a keeper.

Cole: If you were a book I'ld read you every day.

Me: Nope, not working.

Cole: Ok, how about this...
When I first noticed you in the gym, all I could think was 'man she's beautiful. I bet she has a boyfriend.'

Me: Wow. Much better...and no, I don't.

Cole: Good, because this would be awkward if you do.

Me: Definitely single.

Cole: Good to know.

Me: Are you part of the single club too?

Cole: Heck yeah

Me: Sounds like you are the president of the club.

Cole: Nah, just haven't found the right girl yet.

Me: Thats funny, I haven't found the right girl either😝

Cole: Wait, what? Girl?

Me: 😂 J/K

Cole: Your jokes need work.

Me: I like them just fine.

Cole: So, want to hang out tomorrow night and watch movies in my room? Or are you too busy practicing your comic routine?

Me: (pretending to consider) movies are cool as long as they aren't horror.

Cole: You're ruining my plan to cuddle when you're shaking with fright.

Me: How sweet of you (dripping with sarcasm)

Cole: I try! Professor Dry is starting lecture and keeps glaring at me. Talk tomorrow?

Me: K enjoy class

Cole: 😫

I catch myself smiling as I reminisce. In fact I didn't even realize, the smile sort of snuck up on me, silent as a ghost. My fingers are itching to type another text, to keep that conversation alive as long as possible.

You were so funny, a complete goof. I'm not ashamed to admit I went to bed that night smiling and thinking about you. Not just the physical aspects, although you were definitely hot, but your personality traits. The humor you found in any situation. The kindness you demonstrated to a stranger in need. The honesty which set you apart from other attractive guys our age and defined you as Cole.

You called me the next day. The hours flew by and before we knew it we had our movie marathon and went on a double date with Janna and Kris. Three weeks went by before we had our first date.

And as first dates go, it was perfect. Two imperfect people discovering how similar yet different they were and embracing the differences which made the relationship come alive.

Yours Not So Truly,

Elise
