When she opened them again Luna found herself lying on the forest floor alone. It was the next morning.
"Atlis?!" She cried out. What happened to him? Where could he have gone? And his eyes.. what had happened to his eyes? The memory of them sending a chill down her spine.
She stood up and began searching for him, but no longer had she done this, did her mother come running toward her.
"Luna!" She yelled panicked, " Where have you been child? Are you hurt? Thank the gods above you are unharmed! That tyrant! My poor child! When we heard about Atlis and we couldn't find you.. we assumed something awful had fallen upon you!"
"What do you mean? Where's Atlis?" Luna asked. There was a small tug in the back of her mind.
"Oh my poor darling, you do not know ..."
Her mother gently scooped her up into her arms and carried her home without a word. Luna never noticed this side of her mother before, and a pang of guilt hit her as she thought,' she loves me, she would love me forever, but i refused her gift of never aging, her love. She quickly squirmed out of her mothers arms and hugged her as soon as her feet touched the ground.
"I love you, Mama. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I will take your gift and will be with you always."
Her mother simply smiled softly. "Little Luna, I do not stop loving you if you choose a different path. I will love you no matter, old or young, big or small, nothing you do or say could ever change that. You were just following your heart, you just wanted happiness. What mother could ask for more than a daughter with such a heart?" Her mother kissed her forehead and picked her up once more.
Never had Luna ever felt this way. Hearing that she had not betrayed her family made her feel better, but she couldn't shake this feeling and she found herself wondering 'What had happened to Atlis?'
When they arrived home Luna's mother sat her on the ground and they walked hand in hand into their castle walls. The courtyard was quiet.. something was very wrong.
As they walked up the steps toward the door a dark wind blew through the air.
