My road to freedom

Chapter 2: The dream

I don't know how I got home but I managed it. I also managed to withhold my tears, but the moment I closed the door behind me, I curled on the floor and cried. Images of Timothy popped in and out of my mind. At one moment I thought I saw him across from me, but he was all in my head, tormenting me. I don't know how much time I spent curled up on the floor and crying my heart out, an hour perhaps.

"It's no use crying about it Onnica, Timothy is gone, for good!" my mind screamed at me.

I got up from the floor, threw my briefcase on the couch along with my handbag and headed to the bathroom. Regardless of the fact that I did not wear make-up and therefore had no mascara running, I looked fresh out of a horror movie. My eyes were swollen; my face pale and my hair all messed up. The scar across my face made it worse. It was huge, splashed right from my right eye, through my left cheek. I made a hand to touch it. It was rough and felt so new, just like the pain. I removed my hand as if it had bit me. The memories were painful. I splashed water on my face and toweled it.

As soon as I was done, I delved into my work. Work was my refuge. The moment I started working, I found it hard to stop. Burying myself in my work stopped me from thinking about the loneliness that haunted me.

Emma's POV

I watched her as she ran away until I lost sight of her. She did not turn, not even once. Something was wrong, very wrong. Had I said anything to upset her? She mentioned a baby...

"We are back! Where's Onnica?"

I did not notice Henry coming back with Nathan. Somehow the fact that Onnica ran away from me still surprised me. Why would she do that?

"Emma, baby...Are you okay?"

"Yes, yes, I'm fine. The weirdest thing just happened".

Henry joined me on the grass and handed Nathan his toy car from the baby bag. He looked at me, indicating that I should continue.

"She ran away from me, she just stood up and started running!"

I sounded like an idiot. I realized that I did not explain the whole story but I was just too surprised.

Henry frowned," You did not tell her about us, did you? I mean about us being...you know".

I was quick to answer," No, what do you take me for? Of course I didn't tell her that we are..."

"Shh!" Henry interrupted.

I looked daggers at him. He smiled that cocky smile of his. The smile caught me by surprise and my heart jumped. There was no getting used to that smile, it wasn't the first time, nor the second but it always managed to ruffle my feathers, make me speechless. Curse him for being so darn gorgeous!

"So... am I going to wait forever to hear what you have done dear wife that scared our friend away?"

"I didn't do anything! We were talking about us living here. She blurted out of the blue that we should cherish our son and not regret ourselves, like her".

Henry shrugged." So she didn't take care of her son and lost him. Is he dead?"

"I don't know. She mentioned something else, she said "he took him away from me" repeatedly. Someone took her son away from her! Who would do such a thing?"

Nathan, realizing that the grass was not so smooth to drive his car on decided to drive it on his father. He started at the legs and worked his way towards the stomach. Henry caught his arm and shook his head. Nathan started whining. Henry let his arm go and retorted," Go ahead". Nathan continued on his journey happily, probably not realizing his father was not least happy about the fact that he had become a road.
