Chapter 6: The crumbling of the wall
Henry's POV
I looked at the map again. I wasn't mistaken, the name I'd seen before was definitely Wilshire attorneys. This was something. At least we now knew where Onnica worked. Without her, the mission would be fruitless. Nothing added up and it was frustrating.
I looked at Emma who was busy tending to Nathan. Nathan had spilled his iced tea all over himself. Luckily, it was just iced tea or we'd have had a major problem. Nathan seemed to be clumsy lately. He was after all just 2 years old and prone to tantrums. We'd been in the coffee shop for less than an hour and he'd thrown about 3 tantrums.
"Baby, you won't believe what I just found", I said, prompting Emma to look at me swiftly, with a smile on her face.
"Finally, something to work on!" she exclaimed removing her troublesome toddler from the pram and putting him on her lap.
Nathan clearly loved that because he placed sloppy kisses on her cheek twice.
"You don't even know what I have found out", I said taking a sip of my cappuccino.
"I know. Wilshire attorneys!" she shouted quietly.
I rolled my eyes. She was excited, I could tell. She rarely got excited much. Being away from the organization for 7 years meant she couldn't do any missions. She clearly missed it; it wasn't so hard to tell. Breaking this Onnica case meant so much to her. Something bothered me about it though. What if she wanted to continue doing this? What if she wanted to go back to the organization? Her father would be pleased, but I wouldn't. Wasn't it the organization's fault that she had to go incognito for 7 years?
"You are excited, aren't you?" I asked.
She nodded, prompting me to ask,
"Mrs. Watson, you aren't planning on rejoining the organization, are you?"
She bit her lip.
"No, no, no! Emma you can't. What happened to getting your degree and getting a job, a stable paying job? We can't raise..."
"For the last time Henry, it's Cortez-Watson. What do you have against rejoining the organization? My parents had degrees and worked for the organization. They raised me right, didn't they?" she asked, raising her voice.
"They raised you? Where is your mom? Where is she?" I asked and instantly regretted my words.
I wished I could take them back, but I couldn't. A tear escaped her eye and she made no move to wipe it. She just looked at me. I saw the pain in her eyes and cursed myself. What had I done?
She sighed," Death is inevitable".
There was no anger in her voice. She said it so calmly. She was hurting, I could tell. She was a master at hiding her feelings, but I knew.
"I'll see you at home", she said quietly.
She stood up and gathered Nathan's belongings. She put Nathan back in his pram and pushed him in the direction of the door.
"Baby wait, I..."
I doubt she heard anything I said. I cursed in a low voice. I hadn't meant to upset her, but I didn't know what I would do with myself if I lost her again, for good this time. Besides, there was Nathan in the picture now. I didn't want us to be in the situation her parents were in. I wouldn't survive it, couldn't she understand that? I could tell the pain about her mother's death was still fresh and I did not mean to put salt into the wound.
