When Cassidy woke up the next morning, she did her usual routine; showered, brushed her teeth, did her hair, and got dressed. She chose to wear a black tank top and her favorite denim jeans, paired with black high-top converse. She didn't really need to wear make-up, but she always put on mascara to lift her lashes and a bit of lip-tint to give her pout the same rosy color of her cheeks. Running a hand through her hair to make sure it was straight, she finished off her look with an accessory: a silver necklace her mom had given her for her birthday, a small heart dangling that had the words My Angel engraved on it.
Adjusting her top the heart settled comfortably between her breasts. Walking over to her closet, she pushed in a large box peeking out from behind her shoes so that she could close it properly. Getting her backpack, she flung it over her shoulder and exited the room quickly, practically running down the stairs. Her parents and little brother were in the kitchen, her mom flipping pancakes while her dad and brother sat at the table.
"Mornin'," she greeted everyone. She walked past her mother with a quick kiss on the cheek, doing the same to her dad, and patted the three year old's mop of brown hair. "I'm gone!" she called as she darted out the door and closed it behind her.
Cassidy walked to the bus stop and sat down on the bench with a sigh. She couldn't help but wonder where that man was. I hope he's not in my neighborhood... Hearing the small flick of sandals approaching, she looked up to see her friend Ashley walking towards her. She was wearing blue jean shorts that stopped mid-thigh and a baby pink crop top, accompanied with her usual pink flip flops to show off her slender feet and recent pedicure. Her long black hair bounced with each of her steps; she was a petite Hispanic girl with almond brown skin and light brown eyes, a little on the girly side but when you got to know her she wasn't half bad.
"Hey Cassy!" she greeted cheerfully as she sat down next to the brunette.
"Hey Ash," she said, pulling out her iPhone to look at the time - 7:55am - The bus should be coming soon. She looked over at her friend and saw that she was staring at her with a worried expression. "What is it?"
"Did you see any of the news last night?" she asked. "About the man that escaped from Wayfair?"
"Yeah, what about it?"
"I don't know why, but I think there's something more to him. Something they aren't telling us." Cassidy shook her head, indicating she didn't want to hear it.
"They're going to get him, if they haven't already. You don't need to worry about it." Her friend nodded and pointed down the street.
"Bus is coming." The yellow vehicle pulled to a squeaky stop in front of the pair, the doors opening with a small hiss. The two girls got on and moved to their usual spots in the back where their friends, Anthony and Dean, sat with enough space for them to squeeze in. Dean had on a plain black shirt and some baggy jeans with a belt that was most likely not doing its job, while Anthony wore a white graphic tee of a band and dark jeans, looking down texting on his phone with his black hair hanging over his eyes.
"Make room!" Ashley said as she pushed Dean over and sat down. Cassidy put her bag on the floor and sat next to Anthony, running her fingers through his hair to get his attention. He looked at her with his brown eyes and she saw a smirk twitch at the corner of his mouth.
"Who're you textin'?" she asked.
"Macy. She's already at the school and she says she's bored," he answered.
"I told that girl to ride the bus so that doesn't happen." A smile crossed her face. "So, are you two together yet?" she asked. Anthony rolled his eyes but she could see the amusement on his face.
"She only wishes to be with all this," he said, sliding one of his hands down his stomach in an attempt at 'sexy'. Ashley looked over at him and laughed.
"No one wants to be with all that," she mocked.
"Yeah, funny. Why don't you wear something other than sandals? No one wants to see your bunions," he said, sticking out his tongue.
"Bunions?? Bitch where??"
"All right, ladies please! It's barely eight in the morning!" Dean exclaimed.
"Speak when you start pulling girls," Anthony muttered.
"Aye now—"
"Hey!" Ashely exclaimed, turning to Dean. "You got Cassidy and me! Don't listen to emo hair."
"Don't drag me into that," Cassidy said, waving her hands dismissively.
"You two are literally like sisters to me, I don't think-"
"Just let me save your ass and agree with me for once," Ashley said through gritted teeth, poking his chest. Cassidy chuckled and looked out the window as she listened to them have their little back and forth. It always happened on good days like this; they would start some random argument and by the end of it have tears in their eyes from laughter. Looking to the sky, a few grey clouds were rolling in from the south.
"Looks like we might get some rain today," she announced. Ashley immediately stopped her conversation with Dean and looked out the window. The bus came to a sudden halt and everyone's body jerked forward slightly; they had arrived at the school already.
"All right, everyone off my bus!" the driver yelled. The many kids filed out in a hurry and went inside the school, some lingering outside to talk to friends. As the four got off the bus, Macy was the first person they ran into. Her curly red hair ran down her back and stopped near her waist, sharp green eyes blazing. She was wearing a slim fit grey shirt with the blue eyes of a wolf on the chest with black skinny jeans and a cute little pair of boots.
"About damn time you guys got here! C'mon!" she exclaimed, grabbing Cassidy's and Ashley's arms. She pulled them away with Dean and Anthony trailing not far behind. They made their way into the school and Macy dragged them to their sixth friend Lucas, the kind of guy that was cute and smart all in one. He was wearing a checkerboard plaid shirt with jeans that held at the waist perfectly and red sneakers, dirty blonde hair fluffed and framing his eyes; he was on his kindle reading a story. Macy pointed at him and scowled. "Get him off that thing! When I tried to talk to him he completely ignored me!" Dean laughed at her and pat Lucas' shoulder.
"Macy have you not learned by now that this guy does not pay attention when he's reading somethin'?" His hazel eyes glistened with mischief as he grabbed the boy's kindle and held it in the air above his head. Lucas immediately got to his feet and tried to grab it back, but it was just out of his reach.
"Really Dean? Give it back!" he said. The larger ignored him and, tilting his head back, skimmed over a few sentences.
"Is this some kind of love story?" he asked, passing it to Anthony. Lucas groaned and rolled his eyes.
"It's not and you know it!" he growled as he turned to Anthony. "Hand it over before I cut your hair."
"Tell Macy you're sorry for not acknowledging her," the Hispanic boy demanded. Lucas glared at the red head and sighed.
"Ma'am, don't you know by now that I don't listen to people when I read?"
"I know, but when I'm bored, I'm bored. I could die from loneliness like a bunny!" Cassidy wrapped an arm around Anthony's neck and took the kindle from him.
"I'm getting deja vu again... This happens everyday," Ashley said. Cassidy gave the tablet back to Lucas and smiled at him just as the bell for classes to start rang. He put the device in his book-bag and draped it over his shoulder.
"TO MATH CLASS!" Macy yelled, pointing in the direction they had to go and walking like a wind-up toy. Cassidy smiled softly to herself; being with her friends was the best part about going to school. What she didn't know, however, was that today was going to be the last normal day she had with them.
