When the door opened, lighting struck and lit up the area to show about five zombies in their path. Dean led them carefully along the edge of the house and kept the gun up, aiming straight ahead. Anthony could hear the zombies still attacking the fence on the other side of the house as they stopped at the corner. Dean took a quick look around it and pulled back fast, shaking his head.

"We're gonna have to run to the other house across the street," he said as he nodded in the direction of the house he was talking about. There was a flash of lightning, quickly followed by a roll of thunder that lasted for about five seconds. Dean's jaw clenched and he took a deep breath, then turned and jogged across the open area with his body low. Brittany pushed her way to the front with Lucas and Macy, Macy going first with a posture that resembled Dean's. Lucas went next with Brittany following close behind him. Ashley stood beside Anthony as she waited for the other two to cross safely and sighed. He saw her glance down at Cassidy, then up at him.

"You should go first; I'll watch your back," she said to him. He nodded at her and peered into the darkness ahead of him. He could make out the silhouettes of the others waiting in the shadows along the other house. He took a deep breath to calm his nerves and moved as fast as he could with Cassidy in his arms. He took a very quick glance over his shoulder and saw Oscar trotting after him with Ashley right behind him. Turning his attention back in front of him, he saw everyone waving. There was a short moment of confusion before it clicked. Anthony stopped in his tracks and felt the dog bump his legs. Ashley came up to him and looked around, her hand lingering by the katana. Thunder shook him down to the bones and a light drizzle started up. He stared at the others, wondering why they told him to stop, and after looking around he saw what it was.

Something that looked like one of the sick people was standing not too far in front of him. Its eyes were staring and seemed to glow unlike the normal ones. It had its gaze fixed on a spot on the ground, its arms twitching and a small clicking noise coming from its throat. Anthony took a small step forward and instantly regretted the decision, the strange zombie's head snapping up to look at him.

"What the fuck is up with that one?" Ashley muttered. Oscar started to growl and lowered his body as if he was going to attack. The area lit up from a strike of lightning and lasted long enough for him to see everything in more detail.

The zombie's skin was grey instead of the pale, veiny white they've seen. From what he could see, it was missing an arm and its jaw was broken, dangling. What unsettled him the most was its eyes: like he could see without the lightning, they were glowing a sickly yellow color, blood caked at the corners and gathered around the waterline. It continued to stare at him with unblinking eyes, then it let out a gurgling scream that was cut short by a bullet fired and connecting with its head. The bang made the three of them flinch, then another scream could be heard in the distance. They made their way to the others by the house and the group immediately continued at a faster pace now that they had alerted all of the creatures in the area.

They made their way quickly by all of the houses without running into any trouble. They came to a stop in the shadows by a house closest to the woods. Macy got to the front of the group and moved her wet red hair out of her eyes. A strong gust blew through and the rain started to come down harder, brief flashes of lighting and their constant claps of thunder ringing in their ears.

"Okay! Judging by the part of the woods we're by, the walk shouldn't be too bad! As long as we keep a steady pace, we should get there in no time! Keep an eye out for the sick people!" Macy said, having to yell for everyone to hear her over the storm. They all nodded and followed her as she made her way down a small slope. They reached the bottom and the wet leaves sloshed under their feet, a few still crunching. Macy paused and looked around, then started walking forward quickly.
