Chapter IV

thunk...thunk. Another letter in the mailbox. Melanie was sitting on the front porch, waiting, hoping for the letter confirming their adoption to finally come in. she checked the mailbox again, for the 5th time in ten minutes. Just to be sure. She grabbed her last truly personal possesion, her phone. She didn't have a lot of use it except for communicating with Jason but she still kept it with her where ever she went. Engrossed in the games on it; happy birds, speech feud etc, she didn't notice that 30 minutes had passed. When she looked at the time a feeling of excitement washed over her, directly followed by the depressing thought that it wouldn't have arrived yet. Overwhelmed by curiosity she decided to look at it one last time before returing into the warmth of the fireplace (it was autumn after all). For Leah, For Nick, for abdul, for Melanie and Jason, for emily. Wait... Melanie and Jason? she quickly took the envelope and sprinted up as fast as her skinny legs could carry her, the soles of her sneakers screeching on the floor. 'JASON!, It's here!' She halted in front of his bed and suggested to open it. He tore the envelope apart, revealing the handwritten letter underneath. 'Mel can you please read it?' he asked reluctantly, scared of a negative answer. 'sure.....

Dear Jason and melanie,

We have discussed long and hard about the adoption. And we have finally concluded that..... we will adopt.

Best regards,

Chapter V

The room was stripped, empty after Jason packed his things. He rumagged through his few possesions and took several trips down memory lane, the baseball he had gotten at the orphanage trip to his first game, the Yankees vs the Red sox. Mel caught the ball and had given it to him for his birthday. His eye caught the snow globe that was left behind for him the day that he arrived at the orphanage and he shed a tear, he never thought that being homesick for this place to be possible, and yet here he was.

He went out of his room, dragging his bagage behind him. He walked around, taking one last look at everything. After saying his last goodbyes, he went to the waiting room and sat down. He got ready for the couple and when he saw Melanie, he was dumbstruck. She had her hair in a ponytail and she was wearing her best outfit, a short lightblue summer dress that she had bought a few weeks ago. She was even wearing make-up which was so unloke her. 'So what do you think?'. Jason struggled to respond 'It's... it's perfect Mel'. Melanie blushed and turned away so he wouldn't see, he did. ' 'thanks Jason,it means a lot.' she said. He felt fuzzy inside. They heard three knocks on the window and when they looked over Caspar was gesturing them to follow him. They walked to the car, a red and black '65 pontiac GTO. Out of nowhere Melanie said:'Jason, we have to oficially check out at Ms. Jafar!'. Ugh how could he be so forgetful. They ran towards her office, but she wasnt there. But where was the harpy? Maniacal laughter erupted behind them. She was standing right there. With her cold and raspy voice she said:' well, well, you know i can't let the two of you go right? hahahaha' Her voice started to screech like fingernails on a blackboard 'It's time you found out who i really am!' She exploded in a brilliant flash of light. Her face started transforming, becoming grimey and beak-like. Feathers bursting out of the places her clothing used to be, dirty and old. She didn't just look like a harpy, she was a harpy! Jason ran as fast as he could, pulling Melanie along. 'Jason! what is that, im scared!' her voice trembled and tears were flowing down her face. The duo started tiring. 'I thought that the two of you would be tougger to deal with, apparently i was wrong!' she squawked. The harpy closed in on them when Jason felt different, and turned around. Something deep inside of him stirred, something that had been dormant for many years. Suddenly the air crackled and bolts of  lightning bounced of his fingertips, striking the foul creature in it's abdomen. She stiffened up, and fell to the ground, still twitching. this was the last thing he saw before his vision darkened and he too, fell upon the cold wooden floor.
