Chapter 8

Meredith arrived home, dropped her bag on the floor and looked around the empty house. The only things making it look like a comforting home were Emma's toys. She walked upstairs towards the bathroom, and quickly pulled of her clothes. She finally felt relaxed when the hot water washed over her, she washed herself, got dressed again and walked down stairs. She made herself a sandwich, grabbed her car keys and ran back to her car. She hurried to work, parked her car and quickly changed. She bumped into Miranda on her way out of the changing room '' Thank you for having Emma over, and bringing her'' smiled Meredith. '' Not a single problem, Tucker and Emma had a good time.'' nodded Miranda, Meredith smiled once again before walking over to the nurses station. She grabbed a few charts and walked over to Cristina, whom was also handling a few charts. '' Fun night last night?'' muttered Cristina, '' Oh yes, the next morning was even better, when i woke up in someone's bed'' sighed Meredith, as she massaged her forehead. '' Oh really?'' said Cristina with an raised eyebrow.  '' Who's the lucky guy?'' she added, as she closed the chart she was holding.  '' Who do you think'' spat Meredith, '' No..No. Meredith'' sighed Cristina. '' You can not go down that road again'' she added. '' I know, I know.  But it was so good'' whispered Meredith.   Cristina hit Meredith shoulder with a chart, receiving a mad glance from a nurse.  

'' Patient Lisa Lois, 21 years old. Appendicitis. Is in today for an appendectomy'' read Meredith from the chart. '' Which one of you six doctors is performing my surgery?'' asked Lisa, as she looked over to Meredith and the interns. '' I am'' smiled Meredith, '' Doctor Grey'' she added, as she shook Lisa's hand. '' Have you done these often?'' asked Lisa, '' About 10 times, and I've also seen them done quite a few times'' smiled Meredith. '' Lovely'' nodded Lisa.  '' You two can prep Miss Lois'' nodded Meredith, as she pointed towards two interns.  Meredith left the room, and unfortunately bumped into the one person she didn't want to see.  '' Meredith..- Hey'' he smiled,'' Hey, sorry. Got to run.'' muttered Meredith, before brushing past him and towards the nurses station. 

Meredith cautiously looked around as she walked towards the OR, afraid of bumping into Derek again. She scrubbed in, and walked into the OR.  Meredith quickly started the surgery, and located the appendix, but the second she touched it. It exploded. '' Pressure is dropping'' stated a nurse. '' Suction'' spat Meredith towards an intern.  '' Page Dr Bailey'' added Meredith.  She suctioned frantically, as she kept her eye on the machines.  Miranda finally came rushing in '' What's going on?'' asked Miranda, as she went to stand next to Meredith. '' Appendix burst after i opened her up'' stated Meredith, '' Okay, continue with the removal as if it was a regular appendectomy, I will walk you through this'' nodded Miranda, Meredith steadied her hands and started cutting the appendix away.  '' Good job, steady cuts'' nodded Miranda, as she watched Meredith.  Suddenly the machine's started beeping  frantically. '' She's coding'' shouted a nurse, '' Get me a crash cart'' shouted Meredith, Meredith grabbed the paddles and shouted '' Charge to 150''.  All eyes turned to the machine, yet there was no change. '' Charge to 250'' sighed Meredith.  Everyone once again turned towards the machine where no change was seen,  '' Ok, let's go again'' nodded Meredith, as she placed the paddles on Lisa's heart.

'' Call it'' sighed Miranda, Meredith was still massaging Lisa's heart. Miranda reached over to Meredith's hands and pulled them away '' Time of death 3.37 pm'' sighed Meredith as she pulled her gloves off.  '' There was nothing you could've done, this happens. You did everything right''  sighed Miranda as they were cleaning their hands. '' Yet, she is still dead. A simple appendectomy killed her'' sighed Meredith, as she kicked towards a trash can. '' You look exhausted, go lay down'' stated Miranda, '' No, i need to tell the husband first''

Meredith arrived home exhausted that day, the loss of a patient and the whole Derek fiasco truly took a toll. The babysitter would drop Emma of any second so she walked over to the kitchen to start cooking, she still couldn't find all the stuff in the cabinets, to her own great annoyance. She hurried to the front door, when it rang. '' Emma, baby.'' smiled Meredith as she wrapped her arms around her daughter. Meredith lifted her up and handed the babysitter the money '' See you tomorrow'' smiled Meredith before closing the door. Meredith danced around with Emma before sitting her down at the kitchen table. '' Go grab your coloring books, dinner isn't ready yet'' stated Meredith. Emma obliged , and rushed over to her toy closet to grab them.
