phil went to visit her the next morning. there were several ambulances outside, but he didn't give any thought to it; ambulances were outsides hospitals all the time.
"elodie?" he called as he stepped through her doorway. then he froze.
two adults were sat on her bed. the woman was sobbing. police officers were crowded around her window, which was open and swinging in the cold breeze.
"who are you?" a nurse asked him.
he licked his lips nervously. "i'm phil. a friend of elodie's. what happened? is she okay?"
"you're phil?" the woman on the bed stood, a piece of paper clutched in her hand.
phil nodded.
"she left this for you," she said, holding the paper out to him.
"where is she?" phil demanded.
"she... she jumped. out of the window. she killed herself."
no, no, no. elodie, gone. elodie, dead. elodie falling through cold air all alone.
phil took the paper with stiff fingers. he stuffed it in his pocket and turned and ran.
