Your day had been rubbish, to say the least.
To begin, everything that could have gone wrong, had... From oversleeping, resulting in being ten minutes late for Herbology (naturally, 5 points were taken from Hufflepuff), completely botching the day's potion lesson by replacing Honeywater with Horklump juice, right down to the spilled Butterbeer at dinner. All you wanted to do was take a nice long nap in front of the fire, but with O.W.L.S just around the corner, you couldn't even accomplish that! It seemed every Hufflepuff fifth year was crammed inside the small common room, the air turning hot and thick with each body that entered. Miraculously, you managed to snatch a spot by one of the windows and let yourself collapse into the armchair. As if you hadn't suffered enough, you realized you hadn't seen Newt all day. Ironically, even the tiniest of his smiles could have made up for the day's events (even if he wasn't aware of this fact). It was also ironic because Newt was never one to miss a class, let alone a whole day. Where could he have gotten off to? You were two seconds away from marching straight to his room and searching it yourself when a small taping noise caught your attention. You would have thought you were hallucinating except; there it was again. Three timid taps, one after the other. Realizing the noise was coming from above, you jerked your head towards the slightly cracked window. Your heart nearly stopped. There, floating five feet above you was your best friend! Newt's hair was as messy as ever, and plastered on his face was the biggest grin you'd ever seen him wear. You shot him a look that simply said, "What the hell?" before scanning the room to see if anyone had noticed. The quiet chaos of the Hufflepuffs scanning their textbooks and chatting softly offered no indication that they had. You glanced back at the hovering Newt, curiously looking for an explanation. All you received was a gesture towards the door.
"Whaat?" you mouthed. Again, Newt forced his index finger in the direction of the common room's exit. Rolling your eyes, but quite intrigued at this point, you casually made your way to the large barrel door. It was already past curfew, so you had to make a quick getaway. Making your way into the kitchen and sneaking past a couple house elves, you finally made it out the kitchen door and into the courtyard. The cool night breeze was ecstasy compared to the stuffy common room. The air felt heavy and moist against your skin, and you could hear the familiar sound of nighttime crickets all around you. You let out a sigh of relief. The last remains of the setting sun disappeared over the horizon, the copper hues giving way to a dusty purple, scattered with the occasional glitter of a faraway star. The distant woodland skyline stood silhouetted against a velvety abyss, the golden dusk enveloped by the twilight sky.
"Wow."
