"Wait, Mark, what are you talking about?" I asked getting off the couch. I walked towards him. "Who's this girl and why is she taking me to my destiny?" The door opened before he could answer and a girl walked into my apartment. She was about 5'6" with long curly blonde hair and brown eyes. She wore a dark red long sleeved shirt with black jeans, and clunky black boots. She wore something that resembled armor but looked like alligator skin.
"Dan, this is Elliot Blake," Mark introduced me. Elliot put her hand up and he stopped talking.
"Listen, I need you to go upstairs and get your biggest duffel bag, fill it with as much clothes as you can then come back down here," she commanded me.
"What is this?" I asked frowning. "This is the worst practical joke ever."
"This isn't a fucking joke, Daniel!" Elliot snapped her calm demeanor gone. "You're about to turn 17 in just a couple of days and that's when monsters start to smell you so get your ass in gear and pack your shit!" It didn't make sense at the time, but she was scary so I turned and did as she said.
I changed into a pair of jeans, a black t-shirt, and a pair of boots similar to hers that were my fathers. I shoved everything I could think of into my bag along with my toothbrush and some other things. I pulled on a jacket and came back downstairs. Mark was wearing the same type of leather armor that Elliot was wearing.
"Leave a note from your mom," Mark said. "You can't take your phone." I frowned and put my phone on the counter before grabbing scrap paper and a pen.
"What do I say?" I asked. Elliot rolled her eyes, took the pen, and pushed me out of the way. She scribbled a note and handed me the pen.
"Mom, I've gone to follow in dad's footsteps and be a Monster Hunter. I promise to write, please don't worry. Lots of Love, Dan." I looked at her and then Mark.
"How do I know this isn't a joke?" I asked. Elliot groaned.
"I really don't have time for this!" she said. Before I could stop her she reached up and pinched a part of my neck. My eyes rolled up into my head and I fell to the floor.
I was dizzy when I woke up. Everything was spinning. I gripped at the ground, voices whispering all around me.
"Shhh, he's waking up," I heard someone say. My eyes opened slowly and I saw four people around me. There was Mark, and Elliot, and two other girls.
"Good, you didn't kill him," Mark said putting a hand on his chest. Elliot rolled her eyes and looked down at me.
"Are you okay?" one of the other girls asked me. She was pretty with dark skin and big curly black hair. She had dark eyes and a septum piercing. "We were so worried when Elliot brought you into camp."
Camp? I noticed I was laying on dry leaves, and the sky was a light purple color. I could hear a crackling fire nearby.
"I'm fine," I said softly, my throat felt dry. I sat up and they sat back so we were sort of sitting in a semicircle.
"I'm Hudson Grey," said the girl with the septum piercing. She was gorgeous. All three of them were really.
"And I'm Waverly Beckett," the other girl said. She hard long curly dark hair, dark eyes and neat eyebrows, naturally tan skin. I nodded at both girls and rubbed my neck. I looked at Mark, who looked back at me.
"Does anyone want to explain?" I asked. I was still so confused and no one seemed to be giving me any answers.
"Well, I guess we should start with the fact that there are such things as monsters, and there are lots of them," Mark said. "We are training to fight them."
"Training? Pfft," Elliot said and rolled her eyes. "We do fight them, and we win." She looked down at her lap where she was assembling what seemed to be arrows, silver tips and blue fletching. Hudson nodded.
"We're skilled in different forms of fighting, strategy, and Waverly knows magic," Hudson said excitedly. She seemed a bit young, maybe fourteen or fifteen. Waverly rolled her eyes.
"It's not a big deal," she said snapping her fingers. They sparked and a small flame started in her hand. She closed her fist and the fire went out. "We're called Monster Hunters, we're the first or only born children from our parents who passed down The Sight to us."
"The Sight lets us see monsters even when they don't want to be seen," Mark continued. "Your dad was Monster Hunter, he was best friends with my dad..."
"And my parents," Elliot said looking up from her arrows.
"My mom," added Hudson.
"And my dad," Waverly put in. I took a deep breath, taking this all in.
"So, you take after your father..." Hudson said. "You'll be a swordsman and a Beast Tamer..."
"You'll befriend beasts, the more kind ones not so much vampires or werewolves," Elliot said lowly. "It was a beast that took your dad." I frowned.
"My dad died in a car accident," I told her. All of them shook their heads to tell me I was wrong.
"That's what they told people to hide the truth, your father died fighting the man who's in charge of all the demons and monsters in the world..." Mark explained. "He saved my dad's life." I was speechless, all of this was so much to take in. Fuck, what the actual fuck? You only heard about this stuff in story books.
"We kept your father's sword so you could use it when you came," Hudson said. She reached behind her and picked up a long slender item wrapped in a dark grey wool blanket, secured with a leather cord. "He'd want you to have it."
I took it, it was surprisingly light in my hands, like I've lifted it a million times. I unwrapped the sword and looked it it. It was silver, the blade reflecting perfectly, there was an inscription that read: "Fight until the last gasp -WS". The crossguard was pronged, the handle was like cushioned black leather, and the pommel was silver with a gemstone that I noticed was mine, an Opal. I ran my fingers over it, my skin tingling, goosebumps gracing my arms.
This...was my destiny. I could feel it.
