My alarm went off with its loud incessant beeping, scaring me awake. I rolled out of bed and literally fell on the floor. But, I didn't make any sound signifying pain. I was used to falling out of bed, tangled in blankets.

I sat up, rubbing my eyes, and looked at the green numbers on the alarm clock next to my bed.

4:30 a.m.

Thinking it was Sunday, I shut it off, laid back down on the floor and stared at the dark ceiling, contemplating whether I should go back to sleep or start my day early. I wasn't very tried. I turned my head and saw the calendar I kept on the wall next to my desk. I couldn't really see the dates, but I saw the big X's I had drawn over each day that had passed. I noticed that the most recent Sunday was already crossed out, which meant today was Monday.

Shit shit shit

I jumped up quickly and ran to the bathroom to wash up to get ready for the day.

After running around for 20 minutes, I was ready and quickly started making sure I had everything I needed. Once, I made sure I had everything, I slung my backpack over my shoulder and looked at the clock again.

4:55 a.m.

I ran into the kitchen, where I saw my older brother leaning against the kitchen sink eating cereal.

"Xavier, you scared me", I say sarcastically, opening the fridge.

"One of these days, I'm actually gonna scare you, Isai" he replies putting his bowl in the sink.

"In other words, never", I say grabbing my mango Jumex and shutting the fridge.

"You ready?" he asks grabbing his keys from the counter.

I start nodding, but he's already on his way out the door. I follow him and lock the door behind me. I get to the car, open the passenger side door, and get in. Closing the door, I see that he's already buckled in and has the keys in the ignition.

"You walk slow", he says as we pull out of the driveway.

"My legs are short."

"Whatever." he says, rolling his eyes.

I lean my head against the window and close my eyes. The drive to work is usually quiet and today's no exception.

Xavier and I both work at this company our friend Reggie started. We do commissions for the city, other businesses, and even sometimes just for some people who feel like paying us for art. Those commissions range from street art murals to paintings to sculptures. Xavier and Reggie also have part-time jobs down at the gym and I have one helping my best friend Cruz paint cars at his dad's mechanic shop. We're all just trying to help out our familias

Mi familia, mis amigos, and art.

That's all that matters to me.

Xavier pulls the car into the parking lot and parks in the usual space. We get out and walk inside The Warehouse. It's unlocked like always. Reggie's always here. It's like that kid doesn't sleep. I guess I wouldn't either if I had started the company.

We put our stuff down and get straight to work. The city commissioned us to do some mosaics for a few local elementary schools, so we had to get started on cutting up the tiles into pieces and arranging them.

A/N

So the company is actually called The Warehouse and right now they're just gonna work. In the next chapter, Jess will actually interact with characters from the movie. Also, I have another story posted that you can check out, if you want. It's called What A Delicate Heart What A Hard Head. It's a Nico Segal fanfiction.
