"I don't understand. Why would you want to paint us, Cruzito?" I asked while Paco had gone to use the bathroom.
"Why not, Jess?" Cruz responded.
"Because it'll be awkward and weird." I replied standing up from the old couch I was sitting on and putting my hands on my hips.
"Why would it be awkward for me to take a picture of you two in a loving embrace and then paint it for all of East Los to see?", he asked as he concentrated on whatever he was drawing in his sketchbook. He looked at the page as he talked, but I could see that damn smirk on his face.
"Well, there's several reasons, but the main reason is that Paco and I aren't together."
"Yet." Cruz said teasing me.
I was genuinely surprised to hear Cruz say that, "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Mija, he really likes you. Everyone knows." Cruz said looking directly at me.
I felt my face getting warmer so sank back down onto the couch and put my head in my hands to hide the blush that was quickly spreading across my cheeks.
"I know." I said quietly.
"You know? Since when? Wait! Then why aren't you guys together?", Cruz asked confused.
I sigh removing my hands from my face.
"The other day when I came to leave your mom the clothes for your little brother. Paco kissed me and..." I trailed off.
"And? What happened? Tell me." he questioned.
"No se, Cruz. Paco flirted with me. Nothing new, but then he kissed me and I kissed him back. When I pulled away, he went back to flirting and joking with me. And I'm not sure what that all meant. It's like nothing's changed. We haven't talked about it and he hasn't mentioned it at all. So I have no idea what to do." I answered looking down at my feet.
I could hear Cruz shifting around his papers and rearranging them.
"Soooo..." I ask looking at him, "What should I do?"
"Talk to him." Cruz responds simply.
I groan, "But how do I bring it up?"
"Don't worry too much about it and just do it. It's not like he doesn't like you and he's not gonna suddenly stop liking you. He's liked you forever. So just be like "Que onda vato? Do you want to makeout again?"
I can't help but laugh at the last part of what Cruz said.
"What? Que dije? Why are you laughing? I'm serious, Jess." Cruz says trying to hold in his laughter.
I just laugh even harder. Cruz can't control it any more and starts laughing too.
Paco walks in and just looks at us like we're weird.
"What'd I miss?" he asks curiously.
"Nothing." I say as I regain my composure and he sits down next to me on the couch.
"Everything." Cruz says and I roll my eyes.
Paco leans back against the raggedy couch, wraps his arm around me pulling me towards him, smirks and asks, "So you want to paint us, Cruzito?".
"Yeah I just need to take a picture of you two to base it off. I was thinking of doing it outside, maybe with some graffiti in the background and the two off you kind of just holding each other and looking deeply into each other's eyes. I want to try and capture the intensity and emotion." he replies, obviously having giving it some thought.
"Ok cool. Sounds good." Paco nods. (Man of few words)
I'm surprised to see Paco just kind of going along with Cruz's idea. Cruz seeing the shock on my face, laughs quietly to himself and quickly sticks his tongue out at me. Paco, who still has his arm around me, starts to rub it up and down my side, suddenly stops near my ribs, and starts to tickle me. I jump in my seat and start laughing against him.
"S-st-op...please...Pac-o" I say in between laughs, but he refuses. I squirm around, still laughing, and decide to lick his arm to get him to stop tickling me.
"Ew!" Paco shouts while Cruz laughs at us from the floor.
Wow, my best friends and I act like 12 year olds.
