The Sleepin' Starfish was packed when Katrina and Scott finally rocked up, it was supposed to be the traditional end of summer bonfire, but the weather had brought the festivities inside for the evening, and the bonfire had been postponed until the first game of the season. Katrina looked around at basically the whole population of Port Rushton's, soon to be, senior class and sighed. She hated them all. Well, that was probably an exaggeration, Kat had always been an active member in the extra curricular activities at Rushton high; she was a cheerleader, part of the debate team and not to mention captain of the girls swim team- she only really drew the line at chess club and prom committee- gross. Despite this, she liked to think she wasn't your average golden-girl-peaks-at-high-school type of person, she left that title for her friend Alison (Head Cheerleader), Katrina had a mean streak, a cynical side that was her pride and joy. She refused to be peppy.
Speaking of Alison, she was waving at Kat and Scott from the other side of the grill, snuggled in with the rest of the Rushton High elite. Kat noted the familiar caramel-colored head of one Matty Hamilton, and prayed to God she could maintain her usual calm and collected appearance, rather than the muddled- and extremely embarrassing countenance she'd exhibited earlier when he'd come into the shop. Taking a deep breath she flicked her smooth brown waves over one shoulder and looked at Scott, who as usual had become distracted by something and not noticed Alison's frantic beckoning. Rolling her eyes, Kat took him by the arm and dragged him over to their friends.
'Kat, late as usual', Shannon McKinney looked up from her pristine white iPhone, which she had been staring at in boredom, and surveyed Kat with keen green eyes. 'Love the top.' She added, pulling Kat down beside her. Shannon McKinney; Blonde hair, green eyes, legs that went for miles, looked more like a head cheerleader than little Alison with her mouse-brown pin-straight pony. Shan, however, had never shown the slightest bit of interest in any extracurricular activities, and Kat loved her for it. She may not exactly be classed as the alpha bitch of Rushton high, but her words could knock someone on their ass if she felt like it, and she wasn't afraid to get in trouble if it meant she was having a good time.
'Kat, you remember Matty, right?' Tyler Black, the final member of the group, Shan's on/off boyfriend and high school quarterback, piped up with a grin. He was by far Kat's favorite boy on the football team, bar Scott of course, with broad shoulders, copper skin, dark hair, and dark eyes, he was basically every girl's wet dream, and the friendliest guy on the planet to boot.
'Of course, she does,' Alison jumped in with a grin, 'who forgets Matty Hamilton, star of Rushton high, and number one golden boy!' She said in mock wonder, adding jazz hands to punctuate her statement.
'Glad I wasn't forgotten Ali,' Matty chuckled, eyes sparkling. Kat shuffled in her space in the cramped booth, Shan shot her a look that said don't you dare get soppy on me now.
Lovely, oblivious Scott, threw an arm casually around Alison's shoulders 'So what's on the agenda for tonight? Without the bonfire, our underage drinking dreams are shattered.' He put a hand to his heart solemnly, Alison shrugged him off and smoothed down her white crop top in mild annoyance.
'I vote food,' Kat piped up.
'Kit Kat, our hearts must be connected, nay our souls. I was just thinking about a Starfish burger with Jalapeno fries', He grinned blowing her a kiss.
'Oh Burger, Burger Wherefore art thou burger,' Kat swooned, Shan glared at them both.
'You know Wherefore art thou doesn't mean-' She began.
'We know.' Kat and Scott cut her off in unison.
Scott turned back to Kat 'Go order a burger for your one and only, won't you sweet cheeks?' he fluttered his, surprisingly long and thick, eyelashes at her.
'Fine,' she grumbled, 'but you owe me, big guy.' She squeezed out the booth and smacked him around the back of his head as she walked away, pursing her lips happily at the sound of Scott's undignified yelp. When Kat got to the bar it was still busy, so she leaned her jean-clad hip against the wall, and propped her chin upon her hand, resigned to wait to be served. There was a long low whistle beside her, and she sighed ignoring whatever low life creep was trying to get her attention.
'Hello gorgeous,' the guy said, drawing his words out in an attempt to be seductive. She huffed and turned her calculating brown eyes on the guy sat at the bar beside her. She instantly categorized him as one of those people with the rare talent of making everything sound sleazy and gross. She didn't recognize him, which was odd, Port Rushton wasn't big and the only school was Rushton high, making her chances of running into him at some point in her eighteen years of living here very high. She narrowed her eyes at him. 'What are the chances of me getting some digits from a babe like you?'
'I'm sorry, do I know you from somewhere?' Kat said with as much edge as she could muster.
'Not really, I go to Rushton but we don't have any classes together; if we did I assure you, you would remember me', he winked.
Kat curled her lip at his insinuation, he wasn't ugly, not really but his pick up lines were nothing short of disgusting. She raised an eyebrow, then turned her attention back to the bar.
'So? Your number?' The guy said again, Kat turned back to find his phone shoved pointedly under her nose. Someone scoffed, she glanced up and only then realized that Mr-creepy-pick-up-line had a friend. She glanced over at the guy who was glaring at his friend in exasperation, he had dark skin and tattoos, a thrill of recognition ran through her. Cain Sanders, the school's resident trouble maker/ extremely scary dude. Figures that he'd hang out with an absolute twat. She looked down at Mr-Creepy's phone, an average looking light-haired girl was saved as the background.
'I'm sorry what was your name?' Kat asked, her brows creased in indifference.
'Danny Smith, at your service,' The guy grinned.
'Well Danny, don't you think your girlfriend would be a little pissed if she knew you were flirting with other girls?' Danny's eyes widened and he swore under his breath snatching his phone away. Kat felt the weight of a gaze and snapped her eyes up to meet Cain's, he looked at her for a long minute his face unreadable. She felt strange under his intense look, her skin went all itchy and tingly, his sharp grey eyes studied her with such interest she felt uncomfortable. She didn't know anything about him, only that he was dangerous, and extremely good looking which earned him a fair amount of attention from the female population of Rushton. Attention that he was well known for not refusing. Kat, however, had never given him much thought; she stayed away from guys like that, guys that could get her in trouble or threaten her chances at getting into a good school and ridding herself of the small-town life. She glanced away, but still felt the burn of his eyes on her.
'Look, she's not my girlfriend! You don't have to worry about her,' Danny was simpering, looking a little flushed.
'Oh, I'm not worried.' Kat spat, done with this whole encounter. 'I don't think you understand.' She waved a hand at him 'Whatever the hell this is, it's a solid no from me.' She snapped turning away from him and finally catching the bartenders attention. As she looked away she thought she saw the corner of Cain's mouth twitch in amusement.
No distractions this year. She desperately tried to remind herself, knowing it was all going to shit already.
