'We're going to be late,' Scott groaned for the fifth time in ten minutes.
'That's part of the point Scotty,' Kat quipped. 'Stop being so miserable and chuck me that top.' She poked her arm out of the bathroom and waved vaguely at the bed. Scott stared at the large mound of clothes in dismay, before picking a halter neck carefully off the top and throwing it to her.
Kat stared into the bathroom mirror with satisfaction and then slipped into her room and flopped down on the bed next to Scott. 'Got your eye on anyone tonight?' She waggled her eyebrows at him.
'Yes, the vodka.' Scott deadpanned.
'Amen, Sista.'
'Can we go now?'
'ugh, fine. but you better cheer up once you've had some shots.' Kat grabbed her purse and followed Scott down the stairs.
Her dad gave them a lift and dropped them off around the corner from Katie's house, which they could already see a stream of partygoers heading towards. Kat shivered in the cool air, while Scott muttered that it was her fault for not bringing a jacket. The house was warm when they got in though, and plenty of people were already rosy-cheeked, although probably not from the temperature.
Katie had a massive house, with an open plan ground floor, separated only by a massive marble staircase. There were people dotted about everywhere, and a big drinks station set up on the kitchen island. There was a huge stereo blaring out The Weeknd, with the drum and bass turned way up, so the drinks in the cups vibrated. Scott and Kat made their way over to the kitchen, where they hugged Katie politely. Kat looked around and realized she knew approximately two people, Scott and Katie. Scott immediately went over to talk to Tom and Dave, who were on the team with him, dragging Kat along with him. She knew Tom and Dave in the way she knew her lab partner, which was, she'd only ever talked to them at school.
'Scott! Kat!' Dave boomed as they approached, he was already sloshed. He had that look about his eyes, half open, half closed, very intoxicated. Tom wasn't much better, although he didn't portray it in his face as badly as Dave.
'Wow, Kat, you look fantastic.' Tom grinned.
'Subtle.' Scott said, wrinkling his nose.
'Sorry to break it to you, Scott, my boy.' Dave yelled. 'But the days of pretending your best friend's a boy are over, she's a woman now.'
'Hear that Scott,' Kat grinned and raised her eyebrows, 'I'm grown.'
Scott grimaced. 'I stopped pretending you were a boy when we were eleven.'
'It's true,' Kat said, 'Scott's known I'm a girl for a long time now. He's just too dense to notice how gorgeous I am.' She flicked her hair and fluttered her eyelashes in an exaggerated manner. 'I don't know how though, as I really am ravishing.'
'You're funny.' Tom said surprised.
'Yes well I might be on the cheer squad, but scientists were shocked to discover that I have a brain.'
'Wow, savage.'
'Now if you'll excuse me, lads, I need a drink.' With that, she tottered off.
About an hour later, Kat was bored, and a little tipsy. Alison was off chatting to one of Katie's cousins, or something, all Kat knew was that he was tall and blonde. So she was stuck with Scott and most of the football team. She was sitting on the arm of Tom's chair, listening to him chat, and politely trying to fend off his wandering hands. Kat scanned the room for people she could chat to, she knew loads of people that were here, from the debate team, or the swim team, or English class, but she'd already said hi to most of them, and she didn't know them so well that she would spend the whole night with them. She wondered for the hundredth time that hour, where the hell Shan was.
