"Bam. Done." Kayce uploaded the new post to her blog and slammed her laptop shut, pulling her beanie over her wavy bubblegum pink hair and zipping up her long black coat.
Kay's apartment was small, but she prefered it small. There was a little living room next to a big window overlooking the street, a kitchen with an island table, a bathroom, and her bedroom which also had a huge window that overlooked the city. Her rent was reasonable (at least, what was considered reasonable in New York City.) All throughout her apartment were small sheepskin rugs from Ikea, wall-mounted bookshelves with books arranged in rainbow order, and smaller shelves displaying little succulents.
Again- total hipster.
After grabbing a blueberry muffin from Mimi's, she walked down the street and inside One More Page.
"Evan!" she exclaimed when she spotted the tall, blond-haired boy in the HISTORICAL FICTION aisle. Evan whipped his head over to Kay. "Where were you yesterday?"
Evan shrugged, scratching the back of his neck. "Um, just a little cold. I'm good now. But you might not want to get too close to me." He smiled awkwardly. Kayce and Bianca, who was hanging up her coat, exchanged a look across the shop. "Really," Evan insisted, "I'm fine."
Kay still wasn't so sure he was telling the truth (Evan wasn't a particularly good liar) but she nodded anyway and went over to take off her coat.
Bianca walked over to her and whispered "He looks like he could use some cheering up."
"No kidding. Last time he acted weird like this, he and Veronica had some trouble."
"Veronica?"
"His girlfriend. She lives in Brooklyn. She's a dancer at the NYC Ballet." Bianca oohed. "Yeah. She's really good," Kay added. "I've seen one of her performances."
"Ah. Do you think they broke up?"
Kay didn't know how to answer the question. She normally didn't like to analyze or dictate other relationships- whether they were real or fictional- but she shrugged.
"To be completely honest, I'm not sure. Maybe. We should just let him be."
Bianca nodded in agreement and they went to shelve some new books.
"Oh my goodness!" Kay exclaimed in the middle of shelving, causing Bianca to drop three of her books. "Bianca, your show! It's tonight!"
"I know," Bianca giggled, placing the books back on the shelf. "I'm excited! I'm glad you're coming."
"Hey, where's the place again?"
"It's a place called Her Name Was Lola. But we mostly just call it Lola's."
"Like the song." Kay's dads played the Copacabana all the time. "Cool name- very creative."
"Yeah! It's actually only two blocks away. If you want, I can pick you up and we can walk there together?"
Kay agreed, and Bianca said the show started at 8.
"8, as in, 8pm?" Kay asked for clarification.
"No, 8am. Of course 8pm!" Bianca laughed.
"How long is it? The whole show?"
"Well, that depends on how long you stay.""When's your performance?"
"I'm not sure, like, an hour in? Why?""Oh."
"Why do you ask?" Bianca didn't know it, but Kay preferred to be at home by 9:30, and in bed by 10:00. She wasn't so sure if it was the best idea to stay at the show for the full length. Kay wasn't completely comfortable with walking around alone at night in the big city.
