I stood there, looking at my mother. Her gown dripping with her blood. My body wouldn't move. My heart felt like it stopped beating, I became weightless.... I drifted off in my own mind. All became black, soundless, and motionless.
"Ohhh" I felt my head as I woke to it throbbing. The horror of last night flashed back in my mind. I froze, My face blank. Waiting...Wishing it all to be a bad dream. Forcing my self to move, I stood up. Weakly turning my body back to the door. Please be a dream.... Please. The wind brought a smell. It had the faint smell of rust. But also a bitterness. It made the hairs on my arms stand up, the odd oder pulled my attention closer to the door. I tried resisting the curious urge to look, but the smell overwhelmed me. I looked....there she hung...in her blood soaked night gown. slowly looking closely at my mothers body. I crawled over to her once my senses came back to me. All was reality, i reached over to touch her foot...though i knew she dead. Her skin had turned a pale blue, and her veins a deep purple, it looked as if she had walked through snow barefoot. All the life she held with in her, the glow she strutted so beautifully, was torn away, leaving her rotting carcass there on the door.
When i edged closer to her, my hand slipped into a thick ooze. Taking a sudden breath in as i felt it flood in between my fingers, i knew what it was, and i didnt care. I wanted to be by her. Leaning my self against the door near her dangling legs, I lifted up my arm and held her hand. Her blood dripping down my arm. i held onto her tightly, letting my emotions finally be released, I sobbed.
I was on my own now. No longer living the simple life of a 15 year old girl. I have no father, no family. My mother was the only one I had.
Tugging at her limbs , finally gathering my self to accept her decease and burry her body. It had been six days. The smell of her rot was filling the house, and attracting unwanted things. As I pulled vigorously, her skin began to stretch and I could feel her joints pop.
It was horrid. My eyes watered from the scent. Pulling one more time, the foul gasses that was held within that bloated her corpse, exploded out.Backing up as fast as my legs allowed me, mistakingly losing my step an falling onto the ground. Scrambling in the dirt and pulling at the grass to get further away. Once I thought I was far enough, looking up panting; struggling to breath in the cleaner air to flush out the fleshy gas from my lungs. Choking and rolling over, i felt my stomach clinch an churn, causing my tongue to rise, opening the back of my throat. The burning fluid from my stomach forced its way up.
Laying silent on the ground, staring out into the open, my mind was cleared. My thoughts were not present, only the steady flowing breeze I could feel.
Chapter 2
LASTING ~Bringing in one of the chickens from outside, grabbing at the feathers an pulling them off to prepare it for my dinner. Its been exactly one year. My birthday was four months ago, but I didnt give it notice. It was just another age to be living in. Another mark that strikes a year from when I was once 15. That year that changed my life.
Im now seen as a women. Many my age are usually by now married to some hog of a man. Ever since my father moved us on the other side of the mountain away from the city many years ago, we haven't encountered anyone else. Mother spoke of it only when she nagged about not having a market to go to anymore. Other then that, the city was never spoken of.
Lighting the fire in the stove, and placing the freshly butchered chicken into the skillet atop, I relax wirily in the near chair.
"nock.. nock" came to the door.
