"Chase! Its time for your swimming practice." Marion picked me up from my first day of second grade. she told me to change my clothes into my suit because we were going to be late. So I did what she told me too.
Once we got there the Coach was pretty upset at me because I was late. I hated swim practice because there were bullies there. A lot of the boys didn't like me because I out swam them all the time. Today was going to be a bad day, I just knew it. The way the boys looked at me and the way the snickered all the time. Something was going to happen. We did our normal warm ups, sprints, same old swim stuff. Then it was time to jump off the blocks.
It was my turn to go and the coach wasn't looking my direction, so the boys pushed me in. But that wasn't it. The oldest and strongest decided to jump in with me and try to drown me. He almost succeeded, almost. Casey, one of my ok friends screamed once she saw what was happening. She screamed that Noah was trying to drown me and the coach jumped in and saved me from him. I never swam again. Never went in a pool, beach, bath tub. I was scared of the water because of him.
I woke up from that dream and I did my usual, normal route. This time Marion left a note.
Chase. Went walking around Appomattox, then off to dinner. The whole day to yourself. Claire at friend's house.
-Love Mommy.
I really wish she would stop saying mommy every five minutes. So I changed into some shorts, tank top and went outside and read a book. This will be a slow day for me. I thought as I looked at the time.
9:34am.
Then I heard a familiar barking. I looked from my book and Wes was walking Jack while throwing a ball. This boy is always moving. The way his hair shone in the sunlight was amazing. Almost like a raven's feather. He was wearing jeans, a black tank top with a stripped jacket and orange shoes. I laughed a little when I saw his shoes. I went back to reading my book when I heard some one scream. I looked down the road and Wes had stopped. Jack looked like he was on alert. I calmed my breathing and listened closely. That's when another scream came. To the left of my house, across the street a little blond girl with curls was being beaten by an older man. Typical, a blonde girl with curls. I dropped my book and ran to help the girl.
The man was about six two, and I am four eleven. This isn't going to be good. As the man raised his bat i sprinted faster towards him and blocked the bat with my arms.
"What the hell?" he said, but he kept slamming the bat at my arms.
"Kid run! Get away!" I screamed as I punched the man in his nose and kicked his feet off the ground. He fell to the ground and swing the bat at my face, I stumbled a little as he hit me again with his fist. I then kicked him square in his face and took that bat to his stomach, he crouched down and threw up blood. Then there was a familiar sound. A siren. I dropped the bat and ran. I hated cops, learned that the hard way. They screamed my name but I kept running. They cant catch up to me I'm too fast for them . I looked around for Wes or Jack, and no one was around. What did I just do?
"What the hell Chase! You beat a man for no reason! What has gotten into you!" Marion screamed at me.
"He was beating an innocent little girl with the bat! What am I supposed to do? Sit there and laugh like a maniac?" I said back to her. Here it comes.
"Listen, I know it was rough coming here but you have to understand, we could start a new life. Wouldn't it be amazing?"
"No. I hate it here."
"Something will change your mind. I promise." she whispered and she walked away. Something has changed my mind. Some one like me. I thought.
The next day I was woken up by an unlikely person. Wes.
"Chase! Chase get up we need to leave!" I looked around my room and it was orange?
"Wes, what the hell are you doing in my house at dawn?" I said and pulled the covers over my head.
"Saving your life!" and he picked me up. His left arm went under my knees while his right went under my head. His hands were soft and careful around my body. I noticed his hands avoided my shoulder blades area. He knows.. I looked down and I was in really short shorts and a black tank top.
"Wes! What are you doing?" I screamed.
"I told you! Saving your life!" he said as he kicked the door open. My house was in flames. The whole upstairs was in flames. I was terrified of fire. Then again I was terrified of everything, past experiences. I looked around there was no way out. My eyes searched his eyes for anything. He wasn't scared. I buried my face in his shirt and was crying. My face was wet from tears. My hands grabbed his shirt and balled pieces up. His arms wrapped around me tighter and held me closer to him. He's not going to let anything happen to me. I thought to myself. Then I see stars, but not in the sky. I see Wes' eyes before I pass out.
