Mikes POV
I'm just drifting off to sleep. I'm in the gym at school now. with Eleven of course. I don't know why we're here. the gym is completely empty other than us. I sit down, crossing my legs, and Eleven sits too. facing me. she starts to look at me and is telling me a story. a great story about her powers. suddenly I hear her voice turn groggy.
"Mike."
I continue to look in her eyes, and ask her, "what?"
"Mike."
And I'm awake. Eleven is standing in my doorway. Looking at me. Tears streaming down her cheeks. The imprint of a pillow stamped on her cheek. Wearing the nightshirt I gave her. It's too big for her, it goes past her knees. She looks so adorable standing there.
"Eleven," I glance at my alarm clock "why are you up? it's past midnight."
"mike. can i- can I sleep in here?"
"Of course. Sit down. Tell me what happened."
"I had a bad d-dream. It was scary."
"What was your dream about?"
She pauses for a moment and looks at her feet. She wiggles her toes, and looks back up at me.
"Bad men. Papa."
I take Eleven into a tight hug, and our chests pressed together. I can feel her heart racing. I hold her for a good 5 minutes. I trace shapes and letters on her back with my index finger and her heartbeat slows. I let her go and move over so she can settle in. I let her lay closer to the wall, and I lie on the other side of my bed.
I realize I'm sharing a bed with a girl. My mom had given her a brand new bed in the basement because that's where she wanted to be. I offered my room, but she didn't take it.
"Goodnight Mike."
"Goodnight El"
I'm watching her fall into a deep sleep. The sound of her breathing is relaxing. After a little while, she inches closer to me. She presses her head into my chest, and I embrace her. I let her go and lift her chin to see her face. She is so beautiful. She flinches a few times and begins to look scared. Tears begin to roll down her face again, and she whimpers.
"Papa" she mutters.
I hold her and whisper to her. She kicks her feet, so I let her go. I keep telling her that she's safe, she's with me, she's in my bed, I'm protecting her, there's no need to be scared. She's wiggling like a snake, trying to get out of something, or somebody's, grasp.
"No" she says, quietly, whilst holding onto my T-shirt. She presses her face into my chest and cries into my soft white shirt.
She suddenly lets go of me and rolls onto her stomach. She's crying and kicking and muttering "no" and "papa" over and over. She flips onto her back and finds my hand holding it tightly. I squeeze, two quick squeezes, and she squeezes back twice. She can feel it. She starts to furiously shake her head and cry "papa"
"El. El. EL. El you're safe." And she sits up, gasping for air, scared and crying. She opens her eyes and I sit up, facing her. She looks at me longingly, and I understand. She shoots towards me, and buries her cheek into my chest, and sobs into me. I hesitate and finally, place my hands around Eleven's shaking body. And I hold her. I allow her to sit in my lap, and we rock, gently, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, and she relaxes.
We lie down again, and she sleeps closer to the wall, again this time. She sleeps on her side not facing me, and I sleep in the same direction. She slowly inches her back closer to my chest, and I understand. I hold her for the rest of the night. No more nightmares.
