I Miss You

MIKES POV

"El we have to leave"

"what"

"We have to leave now"

"why? whats happening?"

"trust me."

"um"

"get dressed. put on your shoes. get that bag mom bought you. we have to leave"

"is there something bad?"

"yes. no. yes. I'll explain later"

"I'm scared"

"don't be. you're safe with me."

She got on the black of my bike. she was still confused. I guess it was probably justified. I kinda made it seem like our house was being invaded. there's a surprise

"mike"

"yes"

"where are we going"

"you'll see"

"why did we have to leave"

I took a sharp left turn and glided down a hill. I was trying to avoid her question because I didn't want her to find out there was no emergency. the emergency aspect was vital to this surprise. after a few minutes of riding gently through the woods, avoiding twigs and branches, and being safe with the bike, (my love was on it). I have to keep her safe.

I don't think she knows it's her birthday.

did she forget?

"mike"

"yes?"

"did you hear me?"

"I'm sorry. I didn't. I was lost in thought"

"what happened?"

"you'll see"

"tell me now"

"I cant"

"mike"

"Yes, love?"

"please"

finally, in the nick of time, i caught sight of Will. 

"Will!" I called out. he waved us over. he was on his bike too.

"so mike. you heard what happened?" he asked me. the boys were in on it. I felt bad for El secretly. she will find out.

"yes. but El hasn't"

"that's for the better," he said. "over there. that's where we are supposed to park."

"I see it. pull over early and park the bikes. we need to organize."

"wheres Lucas? I know Dustin is at point A but Lucas is supposed to be at point B and we already passed C"

I saw him approaching point B when I passed C"

"what are you guys talking about?" said El, who was not told about the plan.

"El, get off the bike" she stepped off slowly, and not very surely.

"its okay El," Will reassured her. he gave her his hand so she could step off safely. I had to organize. nothing can go wrong.

we began to walk to point A. it wasn't more than 10 feet, but we had hidden our bikes behind bushes for safety. Point A was a clubhouse, Dustin, Lucas, Will, and I had spent days building. point B and C were too, but they were not nearly as impressive. Point A was the most important. it held food and supplies for the game.

When we finally arrived, we made El sit down, and we explained what was going on. summer break had just started. we had all told our parents we were going to each other's houses for the week. we told her that we had just enough food for the five of us. we told her about the tools. we had to tell her about how we had set up fires so that we can keep warm. we were running away to the woods for a week. we inappropriately named this trip a game. it was going to be fun. I hoped silently. nothing could go wrong. 

nothing.

"I'm still confused..." she said innocently. she frowned and looked at her feet.

"Why darling?"

"well... you guys made it feel like we were evacuating."

"if we didn't you would have been reluctant to join us on our adventure."

"still."

"Hey," I said. I put my thumb under her little chin. I turned her head towards mine. she looked me in the eyes. she looked at me with those hazel eyes. I was staring. I didn't feel guilty though.

I leaned in slowly and kissed her on the mouth. she did not relinquish. she was stiff and shocked at first but melted into me, melted into my shirt.

will walk away with Dustin, to get leaves for a fire or something. I leaned into our kiss more. I leaned in because I loved her. I love her.
