It was a cold winter’s day and Ryan was in the backyard, drawing his surroundings, like any fifteen year old, who enjoyed art, would.  He then heard the wolves howling in the woods.  They were pretty close because he could hear them loud and clear.  He shrugged it off and continued to draw, whilst sitting on this old picnic table in his backyard. He looked up and then down for one second and some creature pounced onto him.  Clawing at his face and scratching the rest of his body.  He realised it was a wolf, with dark grey eyes.  Then other wolves surrounded him as well.  Ryan was scared, his heart pounding with fear and his thoughts filled with worry.  He didn’t know what to do, so he just laid there.  The first wolf stopped scratching him and another walked towards him.  This wolf had big, hazel eyes and light brown fur.  This wolf sniffed at him and then bit Ryan in his left side.  He roared in agony and felt pain run throughout his left side.  Then, all the wolves ran away back into the forest, leaving Ryan paralysed in pain and death becoming his future.

He woke up, completely in sweat.  His heart was pounding just as hard as it was in the memory.  This dream was very familiar to Ryan.  It was repetitive and he couldn’t do anything about it.  He didn’t want help from therapists, because to him they were useless. After waking up, Ryan’s mind was racing and as much as he tried to fall back to sleep, he couldn’t.  So, he grabbed his running gear and jumped out of his window and ran.  It was his simple remedy for his racing mind in the middle of the night.  He enjoyed running, it made him stop thinking about everything.  His mind was able to clear and not think a single thing.  He ran up this wood track to the hill top.  He heard the howls of wolves and the chatters of other animals.  As soon as he got to the top, he stopped to recover.  He took in the cool, woodsy air and looked at his surroundings.  The sky was clear and filled with stars and the moon was bright, but it wasn’t full like the night before.  He could see the all the different types of foliage, the mossy rocks and the ever green grass.  He liked the way his surroundings calmed him.

After a while, he felt he wasn’t alone, as he heard the snap of branches and the crumbling of rocks under a animals feet.  He turned around and saw a pack of wolves.  Ryan thought he was going to freak out, but he didn’t.  He was calm as ever and he was confused to why he was.  The wolves looked at him, sniffed and bowed.  He looked at them weirdly, until pictures and voices flashed through his mind. ‘I knew he wasn’t going to know he was the new Alpha’ said a male voice. ‘Shut up, he can hear us now.  He will know that he is the Alpha now’ said a female voice. ‘Okay Ryan, I am Jeremy, the Beta of the Silver Moon clan.  After you were bitten two years ago, it became your destiny to become the Alpha of this clan.  Even though you only turn at a full moon, you can be taught to turn at any time.  I know this might be new to you and might freak out a little; you need to be level-headed.  So welcome Alpha Ryan,’ said Jeremy and he bowed.  Ryan was slightly freaked out, but he needed to be rational.

“Hello everyone.  This is of course slightly weird for me, but I know I will get used to it.  As you know, I’m Ryan.  I don’t know why I am the Alpha for this pack, but I never wanted this life.  I despise it.  I hate the monster I turn into.  When two of the wolves attacked me, I was left to die.  Do any of you even know what it’s like to feel absolutely hopeless, knowing that you are going to die?  I also find this totally rude that after all this time, knowing nothing about being a wolf, not being confronted or helped.  I want none of this and I never will,” he said and started to run from the pack and down the trail to his home.  He was wondering if he was being followed, but he turned around and saw nothing but trees.

He finally got home, climbed through his window and took off his clothing.  He then had a shower and climbed into his bed.  As he drifted off, Jeremy’s voice repeated through his mind.
