POV- Twila
February xx, 16 A.P.
"Opi, stop being so slow!" I called, purposely speeding up.
"Twila, stop doing that," Opi whined. Uah, who was swimming beside me, being ever polite, stopped and waited for Opi to catch up. I stopped and swam back to her and waited as well. Then, when I looked down, I saw that we were already at our destination.
Opi caught up, out of breath (just kidding mermaids would die if they were out of breath and nowhere near more oxygen). "Nice going Twila. You were too busy trying to show who's fastest that you swam right past the cages," she said. Uah snorted.
"I was just anxious to get here. Besides, the real test of speed is how fast you can get back," I retorted.
We swam down to the cages we had set up to catch our prey. Their were 10 traps set up. The traps were 10 feet long and could only be set off by a very fast and very large fish. Six of the cages had a single sailfish trapped in it.
"Dibs!" Uah called out, pointing at the larest sailfish. I chose the cage next to her and started untying the rope that held it down.
"Everyone has their knife, right?" I surveyed. Both Uah and Opi had theirs. I made sure I had mine in my satchel.
"Ready?" I asked, looking between Opi and Uah. Hey both nodded. "Set! Go!" I lifted my trap up and grabbed the sailfish by the sail before he could dart off.
The sailer began swimming in the wrong direction. I pulled myself onto it so that my belly was flat against its back and yanked hard to the left. We were now headed back towards the pod. Uah and Opi were both already a hundred meters ahead of me. Sailfish swim roughly 10 times faster than mermaids.
Within three minutes, we were already back at the coral reef we call home. Me and Opi had finished neck and neck, but Uah and her sailfish had still beaten us both. I fished (no pun intended) in my satchel for my coral knife and pulled it out.
"I'm sorry, have peace," I whispered to the sailfish beneath me. With that, I reached around and slit the creatures throat. We immediately stopped moving forward. I almost flew off the fish but I held on tight.
I let go of the fish and let it fall to the sea floor. Uah and Opi were already at the bottom. Some mermen who's names I never bothered learning swam over and picked up our fish to drag off to food area. I don't know how it only takes four of them to carry each fish. We now had three more days of food for the pod.
