Minutes later...
POV- Opi
I swam home by myself. Uah and Twila flew off to somewhere without me. I had made my home several years ago. It merely consisted of two rock shelves and everything in between. A few months later, Uah made her place of residence beneath mine. I didn't mind.
When I arrived, I plopped down on my bedding. My bedding was made up of mosses and other undersea flora, which grew naturally in that spot, as well as mosses and seaweed I had found elsewhere.
I curled up in the fetal position. Ow! I thought. My clamshells were pinching my skin. I tore the aggressors off. Effing bras.
I managed to get a few hours of sleep before Uah and Twila burst into my abode. Twila shook me awake. "Come on, we have to go." She whispered urgently.
"Go where?" I asked dazed, not really awake yet. "And your shells aren't on straight, Uah," I pointed out. Why wouldn't they be on the right way? It looked hastily established. I thought to myself.
"We need to leave now," Uah said, adjusting her shell bra.
"And don't forget to cover those up," Twila giggled. Yeah, yeah. It was a running gag that I supposedly have perfect breasts.
As we swam towards the far end of the reef, I asked. "Are you guys going to tell me what's going on?"
Uah and Twila gave me worried looks. Then Twila said the one word I dreaded most, "Sharks."
The color drained from my face. Sharks certainly aren't the most dangerous creatures, but they aren't good news either. We swam into the midsts of several mermen and mermaids. More than one merman was telling a mermaid something along the lines of "Don't worry. I shall protect you." In response, they typically got slugged in the arm and told "I can take care of myself."
A few mermen were carrying an assortment of weapons and distributing them to other pod members. I wondered how many sharks there were. One or two sharks could easily be taken on by 4 or 5 brave mermen trying to impress the girls. Hey, if they want to risk their life for us, then good for them, better for us.
I grabbed Leu, one of the elder mermen and asked his many sharks there were. "A lot," is all he said.
Uah and Twila both grabbed long knives. I grabbed a trident. You know, a real point-focused trident, not one of thoses phoney outwards tridents.None of us have fought a shark before. I suppose that's why my two friends wanted knives, something they do know how to kill with. I, on the other hand, didn't want to get closer than I had to, hence the long trident.
"Thirteen!" Someone shouted. "Thirteen sharks!" What? That can't be. Sharks almost always travel alone. Many people around me gasped or stared in disbelief.
Another merman shouted with a shaky voice "We... we can't fight thirteen of them! We'll all die!"
"Too late," a mermaid near me piped up. "They already smell us."
