First ever song fic. I'm sorry it's bad.
I found God on the corner of First in Amistad.
Where the west was all but won.
All alone,
Smoking his last cigarette.
I said where you been?
He said, ask anything.
I was walking down the street, heading towards the corner store to pick up more milk for Axel. I had my blue hoodie zipped up and with the hood up, earbuds in listening to My Chemical Romance. I kept my head down, hands in my pockets, wanting to avoid all social interaction as possible. The reason Axel sent me out was to talk to someone but truth is, I've hardly wanted to say a word since my boyfriend disappeared last month.
I mouthed the words to the song that was playing as I turned the corner that the store was on. I laid a hand on the door, about to push it open when something in the reflection of the glass caught my eye. I didn't turn, just kept staring at his reflection. He raised his hand in greeting but didn't move from his position against the wall on the other side of the road.
I pulled away from the door, and stormed across the road to where he was standing. I ripped the earbuds from my ears without pausing the music. I glared at him with all the possible strength I could muster.
"Zexion." I growled, watching him meet my eyes calmly, "Where. Have. You. Been?"
"You can ask anything you want. I'll give you that much." He smiled softly, like he hadn't been missing for a month without word.
"Where the hell were you?!" I yelled.
Where were you,
When everything was falling apart?
All my days,
Spent by the telephone.
That never rang,
And all I needed was a call.
That never came,
From the corner of First and Amistad.
"I was waiting for you! For a text, a call, a letter, a sign, anything, that you were okay! They thought you were dead!" I shouted, grabbing the front of his shirt and pulling him closer to me. He winced, but kept his calm demeanour, indigo eyes not looking away from my blue. "They told me you were dead, Zex. That I shouldn't bother waiting. All they needed was me to agree, and then they'd be a funeral. Zex..."
Lost and insecure,
You found me, you found me.
Lying on the floor,
Surrounded, surrounded.
Why'd you have to wait?
Where were you, where were you?
Just a little late.
You found me, you found me.
He slowly prised my hand from his shirt, and took a step back from me. If I were him, I would have done the same. I was blinded with anger, I wanted to hit him. To scream, shout, and rampage around the town.
"I think, Demyx, the main thing is that you found me." Zexion answered. He shook his sheet of blue/purple hair from his face, briefly revealing his other eye for a moment.
"You could've been dead." I repeated, "Zexion, you were dead for a month. You could have been lying in a ditch, surrounded by a pool of your own blood. Where were you?!"
"I'll admit that I was a little late back, but you still found me." He said again.
In the end,
Everyone ends up alone.
Losing her (him),
The only one who's ever known,
Who I am, who I'm not, and who I wanna be.
No way to know,
How long she (he) will be next to me.
"Why won't you give me a straight answer?!" I groaned in frustration, punching the wall next to him hard enough to break the skin, but not enough the break the bones, "I've been worried sick! You know what Axel's been telling me? 'Everybody ends up alone in the end.' I'm seventeen! Besides, he's dating Roxas now."
"He is?" Zexion blinked before his smile returned, "That's great. I'm happy for them."
"What about us, Zexion?! What are we doing about us?!" I pulled my hand away from the wall, cradling the bloody fist in the left hand, "Are you going to leave again?"
Lost and insecure,
You found me, you found me.
Lying on the floor,
Surrounded, surrounded.
Why'd you have to wait?
Where were you, where were you?
Just a little late,
You found me, you found me.
Zexion just shrugged, "I might have to. It really depends."
"On what? What does it depend on?" I sighed, running a hand through my hair and, in the process, knocking my hood off in the process, "You said I could ask questions, so why aren't you answering them?"
"Some things I can't answer." He shrugged his hands into the pockets of his MCR sweater that was mine.
"You can't tell me where you were?" I asked in a deadly tone.
Zexion just shook his head, lips sealed together in a tight line, "But-"
"Yeah, yeah, I found you." I frowned, rolling my eyes before looking at the damage done to my knuckles.
Early morning,
City breaks,
I've been calling,
For years and years and years and years,
And you never left me no messages.
You never send me no letters.
You got some kind of nerve,
Taking all I want.
"That looks bad-" He murmured, reaching out to look more closely.
"It's nothing." I interrupted, pulling my hand back against my body.
"Dem, it looks bad. We need to bandage it before it gets infected or anything." He frowned at me, taking a forceful step forward. That made me take one back. Despite the throbbing in my hand, I was still mad as anything at him. Sure, I wanted the pain to stop but I also wanted him to answer my questions, and the latter was more important.
"Why didn't you call? Surely you can answer that one." I asked relatively calmly.
"Because there was no signal. I wanted to call. I really did. I looked around for some sort of signal for ages but there wasn't any." He answered.
"You could've sent a letter." I pointed out.
He shook his head, "No way to post it."
"Where were you, that had no signal and no postman?" I repeated again.
Lost and insecure,
You found me, you found me.
Lying on the floor,
Where were you? Where were you?
"I did it for you guys." Was all he said.
"Excuse me? What do you mean?" I sighed, eyes drifting to the pavement, "You know, I haven't-"
"Spoken to anyone since I left. I know." Zexion finished with a roll of his eyes, "That isn't good for you."
"Wait, how do you know?" I blinked, looking back up at him.
"Axel told me."
"You've been in touch with Axel?!" I yelled.
"Only since yesterday." He covered quickly, "Just to ask if you were okay. And when he said you weren't, I came into town to try and find you. But Axel said he would send you to the corner store so you could find me."
Lost and insecure,
You found me, you found me.
Lying on the floor,
Surrounded, surrounded.
Why'd you have to wait?
Where were you, where were you?
Just a little late.
You found me, you found me.
"Why did you wait for Axel to give the 'ok' for you to come back? I..." I laughed dryly, "I bet you have an excuse for that as well. You know what, don't worry about. I'm going to go and get Axel's milk and head home. I didn't meet you today. I haven't seen you in a month."
"What, so now you're going to act as if I'm dead to you?" Zexion snapped, anger flashing in his eyes for the first time.
"I did it for a month. Why not longer?" I laughed again, "Some boyfriend you are."
I turned away from him and walked back to the corner store.
"Demyx! Please, wait, Dem!" I heard him call after me but I just kept walking. Into the store. Pick up milk. Buy it. Earphones in. Leave.
I pushed the door open, plastic bag in hand. My eyes drifted to the wall opposite the corner store. No one was there. But on the wall they're was faint splattering of my blood from when I punched it. And folded up on the path was my sweater. The one Zexion left with.
Why'd you have to wait?
To find me?
To find me?
Song is 'You Found Me' by The Fray.
