"Honey wake up, we have to prepare the new year's party at your uncle's restaurant." Emma's mother spoke when she sat down next to her, making Emma groan before sitting up in bed. "I'll be right down" She said, making her mom nod before leaving the door behind her. Emma got out of bed and searched the pile of clothes on the ground, pulling out the only dress she could buy herself at the thrift store. She slipped it over her head and walked over to the mirror to run her fingers through her hair before walking down stairs. "Done" She spoke as she entered the living room, letting her feet slide into her slippers. "I'll drive the four of us there, since I assume you're coming too Cassian?" "As always" He chuckled before following the 3 women outside. Emma's mom started the car and Emma got in next to her, letting the other two sit in the back. "Uncle Sam!" Emma happily spoke as she exited the car and hugged her uncle tightly, his beard tickling her neck. "Ah Emma, it's been so long" Her uncle spoke with a smile before walking over to her mom and Robin. Emma grabbed Cassian's hand and told him to follow her, pulling him through the restaurant before she opened the back yard. "We'll hold the party here, what do you think?" Emma spoke to him with a broad smile on her face, making his chest tighten again. "It's beautiful" He spoke, but he was staring at her and not at the garden filled with tables and a small podium. "Jamie will take a few of his band members with him to perform some songs and we'll put the countdown on the tv there" Emma excitedly continued before her Uncle and the others walked into the yard too. "Thank you so much for this, Sam" Her mother spoke, making a proud look form on her uncle's face.
Emma was in the middle of greeting the guests when Cassian and Sam were busy with turning the lights on, her mother and Robin setting some glasses and champagne bottles down. A surprised expression formed on Emma's face when her eyes met Jack's, his hand resting on his wife's back as their teenage son had a bored expression on his face. "We didn't have any plans tonight so we decided to come by" Jack spoke with a smile, "I did" his son sighed before his wife joined in too, "Yes we did indeed, but we had to go to this poor excuse of a party, good I'm glad I brought hand sanitizer, come on honey" She spoke as she pulled her son inside with her, leaving Jack and Emma standing outside. "She's a real charmer" Emma chuckled, "Yeah, you don't have to tell me" Jack groaned in response before following Emma inside.
Emma sat down on one of the chairs and looked at Jamie on the small podium, the strumming of his guitar making a pleasant sound to her ears. He started with a slower song and a hand suddenly reached out to her, making her chuckle when she looked up to see Cassian. She took his hand and he pulled her into a small open space in the middle of the garden, all of the people there too busy with chattering to even notice them, except for her mom and Robin. Cassian pulled her against him and placed his hand on her back as he slowly guided her along with him, moving his face slightly closer to her. He let his forehead rest against hers as she closed her eyes, digging her fingers in his shirt that was a few sizes too big for him and was covered in rips and holes. She felt his warm breath on her face which made a slight shiver travel down her spine, before the music stopped. Cassian moved his head back slightly to look down into her eyes, swallowing thickly to calm his nerves. "Can we go home? I'm tired." Robin's voice suddenly sounded, making Cassian move straight up again. "Already? I thought we would celebrate new years here.." He disappointedly spoke, "No, we're leaving." She said, making him give an apologetic look at Emma before he followed Robin. Emma walked over to a quiet spot in the corner of the garden, taking a glass of champagne with her along the way. Her eyes looked at the timer on tv which had already reached thirty seconds before twelve. "What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be over there to kiss the wife at twelve?" Emma softly laughed when Jack walked over to her, coming to a halt right in front of her. She could hear the people counting down from ten as he moved closer to her, before his soft lips met hers in a deep kiss, the loud bangs of the fireworks sounding in the background. He used his free hand to wrap around her waist and pull her against him, her free one coming up to rest on the side of his face. He pulled away carefully and smirked down at her, "Happy new years Emma" He spoke before disappearing into the crowd again, making Emma press her hand down on her chest to feel her heightened heart rate.
