JUNE

"Please, Metias, just this once. I won't mess anything up, I promise!" I plead with my brother.

"No, June. Last time you came on a mission, you broke half of your body," Metias protests.

"It was only a few ribs, I was training again in a month," I shrug it off, "Anyways, it's just guarding the hospital, right? What could go wrong."

He sighs heavily, "alright. If you so much as get a cut, you're-"

"Never going on a mission again, I know."

He gives me a serious look, then a smile, "we leave in ten."

I grin, "awesome."

I run upstairs into my bedroom, shooting open my closet doors. I grab my uniform I would wear around Drake University. It looks like a regular soldier's uniform, but without all the badges and stuff.

It had been a long time since Metias had let me come somewhere with him. He was always afraid I'd get hurt. "Please," I laugh, "the next time I get hurt is the time I see Day."

Day is a fugitive of the republic. Most wanted, may I add. 200,000 republic notes is the reward for any information on him. Nobody's been able to catch him yet, and nobody will until they let me graduate from Drake.

"June, time to go!" I snap out of my thoughts, and sprint down the stairs, but on the last five, I jump to the bottom doing a dramatic front flip.

"We're on a mission, Ms.Iparis," Thomas, Metias' Lieutenant, scowls, "no fooling around."

"Alright, mom." Thomas gives me a shocked, unamused look, his eyes glaring daggers into me.

"Alright, get in the car, Junebug," Metias says before I can get the chance to punch Thomas. He's a good person, just he needs to let loose a few times. He's way too uptight.

I hop into the back seat, Thomas in the passengers seat, Metias driving.

Metias and Thomas start to talk about something boring, but I manage to find a few words that interest me.

Mission, day, undercover.

I pieced it together, figuring out that the republic was sending someone on an undercover mission to capture day. God, I wish it were me.

"Will I get a gun?" I blurt out of nowhere, interrupting their conversation.

"Yes, but you are only to use it in case of emergencies," Metias says.

They continue to talk, ignoring me the rest of the drive.

When Metias pulls into the hospital, he parks at the front where parking spots are reserved for the soldiers.

"The trunk," Metias tells me.

I walk to the back of the vehicle. Metias puts the key in, opening the back up. I gape at the contents. All kinds of firearms, melee weapons, and explosives are in the back of the car. It was a goldmine.

"Choose what you want, Ms.Iparis," Thomas tells me, extending an arm to the weapons.

I grin, picking up a few handguns and one quick fire. I put three knives on my belt, one in my boot. I look at Metias, nodding to indicate I'm finished.

"Alright, now, it's just making sure nobody does any harm, you hear?" I nod.

"Good, let's go."

~~~
This is boring. I thought it would be fun and adventurous, but it's just killing me slowly. I'm fixing to tug on Metias' uniform, beg him to take me home, when a boy covered in mud and dirt collapses onto a soldier.
I don't hear what they say, but the boy then stumbles towards the bathrooms, the soldiers snickering.
"Metias, this is boring," I whine. I turn to look at him, but find him missing, "Metias?"
I search through the sea of soldiers but I don't find him nor Thomas. Where did they go? Where could they possibly go?
Metias returns soon, coming from the direction of the bathroom.
"Where's Thomas?" I ask.
"He walked off without a word. Went to check on him, just needed to take a walk," Metias says. I scan his face, but he looks away so I can't.
Thomas soon comes back, a guilty look on his face.
"Metias I'm-" I get cut off by an alarm blaring through the hospital, the emergency lights flash red. Somethings wrong.
"Split up! Thomas, you go that way, half of you follow him, the rest of you, follow me!" We all scamper, half following Thomas, the other half and I follow Metias.
"Stay by me," Metias orders me in a low voice.
We run outside, marching around the hospital, when I see an alley. Metias doesn't see it.
"Metias!" I call.
He turns, seeing it now, "nobody's going to be in th-"
He gets cut off by shattering glass. Somebody jumped from the window.
Metias and I have our guns drawn at the jumper in seconds.
"Freeze where you are!" Metias yells.
The figure stops, and I see some kind of knife in his hand. Judging by the shape, it's a throwing knife, pair. He either lost the other one, or its on him.
"Don't move!" Metias shouts.
I observe the person as Metias advances on him. Judging by his height, he can't be any older than me, definitely younger than the kids at Drake. He looks pretty burly and lean, standing on his right leg. He shifts to his left, but switches back almost immediately. He somehow hurt his Jett leg. He wears a white shirt and a black hat, hiding his hair. I can tell by the way he looks at Metias and I he sizing us too.
"drop your weapon," Metias growls. He doesn't do it, "drop it!"
Before I can react, the boy throws the knife with a strong force, the knife hitting me in the shoulder. I cry out In pain, the force of the knife causing me to collapse to the ground.
"June!" Metias runs towards me, forgetting about the boy.
"No! Get him!" I shout at Metias as he kneels next to me.
"We'll get him later. We're lucky he's a bad aim," Metias tells me, helping me sit up.
Then, suddenly it hits me. That was day.
"Metias, he doesn't have bad aim," I say. He looks at me confused, "that was day."
