I felt bad for hitting that girl. I didn't exactly have a choice, though. If I hit the captain, she would have shot me.
You could see the resemblance of them. The same dark hair, brown eyes with golden flecks, same tan skin. They had the same stance, and I could see the fear and concern in his eyes. She was by far younger than him, possibly younger than me. She was probably just tagging along, and now she's injured. She's probably in her freshman or sophomore year of high school.
Now she's in the hospital because of me. And where am I? The sewers, half dead. Instinctively, I reach up to grab my pendant, but find it not there.
My pendant.
I must have dropped it while running from them. Had I been any later, I would have been dead. No use going back for it now. By this time, the republic soldiers, doctors, and detectives were at the scene. No doubt they know who I am. They have slight clue what I look like, too.
The captain, Metias I think, would probably be doing anything he could right now to find me. But nobody has the slightest clue where I live. Except Tess.
See, I'm supposed to be dead. The republic thinks I'm dead, the world thinks I'm dead, my mother thinks I'm dead. Maybe I should be dead. Maybe it would be better.
I would have my father back, but then I wouldn't have Tess or John. John is the only person in my family that knows I'm alive. He and Tess are the only ones who know my real identity.
As I stagger through the sewers, I head towards the Lake sector, carefully keeping my fingers from the wall. Touching things means fingerprints. Fingerprints can be used as an indication to finding me, and if they find me, I can't help my family.
I reach the sandy ground in a bit of time. I walk out the end, and stumble up the steps. Tess must have been in the market again because she charges up to me.
