The heavy oak door creaked shut behind Rin, leaving her alone in her new dorm room. The room itself was spacious and well-appointed, with a plush bed, a large desk, and a balcony overlooking the sprawling grounds of Cross Academy. Despite the luxurious furnishings, the room felt strangely cold, mirroring the chill in Rin's eyes.

She stepped in front of the mirror, revealing the stark contrast of her white hair against her pale skin. A sigh escaped her lips, the sound heavy with unspoken burdens. Setting her luggage down, she walked towards the balcony, gazing out at the moonlit landscape.

Suddenly, a voice broke the silence. "Lost in thought already, Rin?"

Rin whirled around, her hand instinctively reaching for something that wasn't there. Standing in the doorway, bathed in moonlight, was Kaname. His expression was unreadable, a mix of concern and something else she couldn't quite decipher.

"Kaname," she acknowledged, her voice regaining its usual composure. "How did you get in?"

A faint smile played on Kaname's lips. "This academy has few secrets for me, cousin. I just wanted to check on you and see if you've settled in."

They stood in silence for a moment, the tension hanging thick in the air. Finally, Rin turned back towards the room. "I appreciate the concern," she said, her voice cool. "But I can handle myself."

Kaname didn't move. "Perhaps. But sometimes even the strongest need a shoulder to lean on."

Rin hesitated, a flicker of vulnerability crossing her features. "There are things I can't share, Kaname. Not even with you."

Kaname's smile softened. "Of course. Your burdens are yours to bear. But know this, Rin – you are not alone. If you ever need anything, anything at all, don't hesitate to ask."

With that, he bowed slightly and turned towards the door. "Sleep well, Rin." He disappeared into the hallway, leaving Rin alone once more.

A wave of exhaustion washed over her. She walked towards the desk, her fingers brushing against a framed photograph – a picture of a younger Rin and Shiki, their faces beaming with childhood joy. A bittersweet pang struck her heart. Shiki. She hadn't seen him since her arrival, and a nagging worry gnawed at her.

Suddenly, a soft tapping sound drew her attention. She looked up to see a small, black bat perched on the windowsill. The bat chirped softly and tilted its head. Recognition flickered in Rin's eyes. "Ai," she whispered, a hint of warmth creeping into her voice.

The bat transformed into a young man with raven hair and red eyes. " Ma Reine," (my queen) he bowed. " J'ai reçu votre appel. Quelle est votre commande ?" (I received your message. What is your command?)

Rin hesitated, then spoke in a low voice. " Trouvez Shiki. Regarde s'il va bien" (Find Shiki. See if he's alright.)

Ai bowed again. " Comme tu veux, ma Reine" (As you wish, my Queen.) He vanished through the open window as silently as he had appeared.

After Ai had left Rin remembered the moment she had met him like it was yesterday but that was a story for another time.

Rin stood there, her expression unreadable. The weight of her purpose settled upon her shoulders once more. Sleep seemed a distant possibility. Tonight, she had a mission to complete, and secrets to uncover.
