I was just standing there, in the middle of the courtyard, looking at my watch, wondering if it was time to get to class. I had chemistry next. My least favorite class, but I got good grades so I tried not to complain too much. Oh, sorry, I should introduce myself. Hi, I'm Hazel. Im just your ordinary 21 year old girl. I attend school at Point Loma university. I wouldn't say my life sucked, because my dorm had a beachfront view and I was a good student, but it was missing something. I pretty much only have 2 really close friends that I could tell anything to. That was Mavi and Byron. The only thing is, Mavi and Byron were always partying. They were social butterflies. I'm not saying that I'm not social because I'll talk to anyone but, I just prefer to sit in my dorm eating pickles while listening to records from my Crosley record player. Since I pretty much only left my dorm to complete daily needs, I never met anyone to consider a boyfriend. Don't get me wrong I've had PLENTY of crushes and I mean PLENTY, just never a boyfriend. Well, that was until now.
I stood in the courtyard. My Mickey Mouse watch pointed at 4:58. Chemistry started at 5:00.
"Damnit!" I said under my breath.
I made a beeline straight for chemistry. I really didn't want to be late. I pushed my way through the crowd of 20 year olds. As I power walked, I felt something hit me hard. I fell to the ground and made a shrieking noise and tensed up, something I always did as a reaction.
"Ouch!" I said
"Oh my gosh, are you ok?"
I heard a voice come from above me. I looked up as I lied there. I saw a man about my age holding a skateboard looking really panicked.
"Yeah I'm fine, I'm cool" I said as I awkwardly stood up. Once I got all my stuff together and was standing like a normal human being, I took a good look at this man. He had brown, short, curly hair and big brown eyes. He was wearing a black shirt, a green bomber jacket, black skinny jeans with holes, and purple high tops. Automatically I thought, man this guy has a cool sense of style, even though I was wearing almost the same thing.
"Sorry for bumping into you with my skateboard...I'm trying to get to chemistry class and I don't want to be late. Sorry." He said with guilt in his eyes. I could tell he was genuinely sorry for bumping into me.
"Hey, don't worry about it. I'm fine." I started. I kinda wiped myself off and was about to say bye when I thought of what he just had said. "Wait, hold up. Did you say you're going to chemistry? With Mrs. Burton? I'm going there too!"
"Oh cool!" He looked weirdly excited to be in the same class as me. "Hey um, do you wanna walk to class together then?"
"Yeah, why not"
We walked for a while in silence before he spoke.
"Oh, I'm Jordan, by the way." He said with a grin and his hand out to shake my hand.
"Well hi there, Jordan. I'm Hazel."
"Ooh, Hazel. That's a really pretty name."
"Haha thanks, I guess"
Okay, that's not the first time someone had said that to me so I didn't take that as flirting. Why did people like my name so much? Anyways, we kept walking in silence the rest of the way. When we got into class I looked at my watch. It was exactly 5:00. I kinda looked back at Jordan and smiled to say like a silent "see ya later" kinda thing. But, he followed me to a seat. He sat down right next to me. What the hell? Does he actually WANT to sit next to me? No. That's not right. It's probably because there is no other seat. I looked around. There were more than enough seats available. He chose to sit next to me.
Class started right as Jordan and I sat down. about 1/3 the way into the class he wrote me a note on a post it. It said:
"I don't get what's going on in this class... do you?"
I responded on the same post it:
"Yeah, it makes sense to me. I can help you sometime if you need me too."
He didn't write back. This time, instead, he nudged me and mouthed the words "yes please" while pressing his hands together as if he was praying. That made me giggle. Unfortunately, I had giggled at the wrong time of the class. We were all deep into reading our text books so it was completely silent in the classroom. So, naturally, Mrs. Burton called us out.
"Hey! You two! Yeah you guys! Cut it out already!"
Honestly that made us both giggle a little more but, we were able to control our giggles until the end of class. Looking back at that moment, I'm pretty sure that was the only time I've ever been caught talking to someone in class. The weird part is, I didn't even get embarrassed. When I was with him I just felt so...protected. It was a strange feeling. Something I had never experienced before. I wasn't quite sure what it was so, I chose to just ignore it and move on with my life.
