CHAPTER 4

You know the weird part about all this?

I don't even know why we even need a captain to play dodgeball, much less two captains.

It was weird- in fact, this whole school is just... weird.

I looked up at Evan again, and his face wasn't readable at all- it was emotionless, to be exact.

And I hated that it was.

It was as if he didn't care whether or not I wanted to be his co-captain, probably because he thinks I'm not cut out for it.

Oh, if he thinks that- he's got another thing coming for him.

"I'll do it," I said, standing on my tip-toes to try to reach his height but only managing to be at about his neck.

Stupid height. I should really wear high heels more often.

"Alright, so, what's the strategy?" Evan asked, and I looked at him as if he had grown two heads.

"What?"

"I'll tell you the strategy boy," I replied coolly. "Dodge, and catch the ball."

~*~

We've managed to win.

Haha, just kidding.

We pretty much lost our chance when half the girls ran around and didn't even try to catch the ball.

Can't they see they're pretty much boosting the boys' egos and proving somehow that girls are stereotypes?!

Thankfully, I managed to dodge the balls and hit the opposite team with them numerous times, and Coach Jack seemed really pleased.

He even congratulated me afterwards, saying I had "great" skills for dodging,  catching and throwing.

It was as if I had won a gold medal in the Olympics.

"You played great out there," Evan said, when he caught up with me at the lunch line in the cafeteria during recess.

"Thanks," I muttered, pretending to pay attention to the food when I already knew what I would get.

A tuna sandwich, a slice of apple pie and a bottle of Coke.

After I paid for my lunch, I headed towards Maddie's table, with Evan trailing behind me. "Hey, Gym was fun- wasn't it?!" Maddie said, a huge grin on her fac as I scowled and stuck my tongue out at her.

Of course, Gym was fun to her- Team B won, and she was on it.

She was even the co-captain, alongside this guy named Henry Brooks.

The whole table went back to talking with each other- Maddie with Jenna; Evan with James- and leaving me looking like the fifth wheel.

But I didn't really mind. Really. I was too busy eating my sandwich and going through texts from my mother about how my brother was coming home today and I still haven't unpacked his boxes yet.

Pfft. He can do it himself.

I texted Mum back saying that I wasn't my brother's slave, that he is in college and he's supposed to be a grown man, and I hate it when she always makes me do his work.

She didn't reply after that.

The bell then rang, and I headed for Chemistry, wanting to get out of the cafeteria. I saw a few boys and girls as I walked pass, and some of them acknowledged me and said that I was a good player, while others (who were on my team) just glared at me and told me I was the worst captain ever.
