CHAPTER 1

Gemini Falls.

I’ve heard of the place, Grandma and Grandpa used to live there about a century ago, or possibly more than that.

Grandpa Brent died a few months ago from lung cancer (do not smoke, kids) and Grandma Rosie, for some reason, suddenly wants to move back there because of the “memories.”

Dad tried to talk to her, or more like pleaded for her not to move to that “bad luck of a town.”

 Dad’s words, not mine.

But Grandma still insisted, saying that the town had wonderful memories, even after the horrible accident that occurred.

So that’s how the four of us- me, Dad, Grandma and my mum- ended up in Dad’s black convertible, heading towards the town that was about a million miles away from New York City.

“Oh, I can’t wait till we get there,” Grandma squealed like a teenage girl, and I cringed at the loudness. I did not like being stuck in a small vehicle, having to place a ton of Grandma’s photo albums on my lap.

Let’s just say, there weren’t enough boxes.

My elder brother, Alan- who is a junior in college, by the way- is going to meet us at house in a few days, since he still has some business to take care of back at NYU.

Please, he just doesn’t want to unpack.

And I’m the one who’s going to have to unpack all his things for him while he stays behind for a few days, and plays… well, whatever college boys play.

“We’re almost there! We’re almost there!” Grandma yelled, and I covered my ears with my hands while Dad grumbles and Mum chuckles.

Mum always finds Grandma amusing, for some reason- but I think it’s just because her mum is probably the strictest person you’ll ever meet in the whole world.

Granny Jenny (it rhymes, I know) doesn’t really like Dad.

OK, that’s the understatement of the century.

She doesn’t just hate Dad, she loathes him. Probably because he only works as a photographer, and all of Grandpa Brent’s money went to his sister (Dad and Grandma keep saying that the will is fake, but Mum told them they should just get over it, because it’s not like we don’t have any money.)

Mum and Dad have known each other since Mum was in middle school (Dad was in high school), and it was love at first sight (that’s what Mum says, anyway.)

Granny Jenny (I always chuckle when I say or think of her name) didn’t approve of Dad from the start, but it’s not like she can do anything about it now.

 Mum says love conquers all.

I actually think that’s kind of dumb.

“There’s still an hour-long drive ahead for us, depending on the traffic. So we’re going to stop at McDonald’s to eat before we take off again. Is that alright Mum?” Dad asked, the scowl on his face clearly visible.

He hates it when Grandma nags at him to ‘pick up the pace,’ ‘not be a slow poke,’ or anything else that has to do with speed.

Grandma groaned, but muttered a “sure,” and Dad parked his car in front of the fast food restaurant.

I got out as soon as Dad unlocked the car, and quickly walked into the restaurant with my family trailing behind me.

The place was crowded, but there were still a few empty tables left.
