Artemis sat perched on her master bathroom counter. She looked at the clock. It read 10:55pm. Then she looked at the magic marker sitting next to her. The plus sign was mocking her. There was soon going to be a baby in this house. A crying, screaming, pooping baby. Artemis instinctively put her hand on her stomach, promising the unborn child she would protect him or her. Looking at the clock again, she figured Wally wouldn't be home for a while. She'd tell him tomorrow. Or tonight, when he got home if she was still awake. Wally's boss was having him work extra hours this week, or else he would get fired.
Sighing, Artemis brushed her teeth and went to bed. About an hour later she heard the door click. Turning over, she saw Wally.
"Hey," she said almost a whisper.
"I didn't mean to wake you," Wally said taking off his shoes.
"You didn't wake me. I can't sleep unless you're home," Artemis sitting up. "How did work go?"
"Fine. My boss is still an idiot. Tell me, why did you marry me?" Wally asked changing into his night pants.
"Because I love you. Why do you ask?" Artemis said.
"No reason. I just don't see why you can love me. I'm barely here, and I can barely provide for you. Tell me the real reason you married me," Wally said.
Artemis smiled.
"What's so funny?" Wally asked.
"Oh, nothing. The real reason I married you was because I want my babies to look like you," Artemis said hoping Wally would catch on.
"Yeah well.... Wait! Babies?! You're pregnant?!" Wally asked jumping up from the spot he where he was just sitting.
"I'm pregnant," Artemis said. Wally kissed Artemis and then placed his warm hand on her flat stomach.
"I promise, I'll provide and protect you as best as I can," Wally said.
"I'm sure you will babe," Artemis said and laid down. Wally soon laid down too and turned out the light. Artemis sighed a sigh of relief and was almost asleep when she felt something on her stomach. She looked down to see Wally's hand feeling her stomach. "Wally, I'm pretty sure you can't feel the baby just yet," Artemis said and grabbed his hand, kissing the palm of it.
"I can still try," Wally said.
Artemis laughed as best she could. She was really tired. "Okay Wallman, goodnight," Artemis said and kissed Wally. Wally kissed back.
He soon heard Artemis snoring softly. Wally couldn't believe it. In nine months he'll be a dad. He gently pulled the covers off Artemis and lifted her shirt. You couldn't see it yet, and probably couldn't tell it was there, but there was a tiny life right inside her. Wally put his hand on her stomach and whispered to the unborn child. "I swear, I will protect you. I love you more than you could ever imagine, and more than you will ever ask."
