I know that if I ever said this aloud Nat would never let it go, but she was right. I had feelings for Dan. Maybe the "love" accusations were a little much, but his panty-melting superpowers were undeniable.

I knew he wouldn't feel the same, considering he had only known me for a matter of days, but something about his awkward humor and...well everything Dan just made me smile.

I loved his laugh and the way he bit his lip. I imagined his lips brushing against mine. His arms wrapping around my wais-"ANNA!" I was abruptly woken from my thoughts. Thankfully, I might add. I can't afford to be so easily shaken by him.

Mary was calling my name from the front of the bakery. I slid from my seat on the counter and walked to meet her. "I'm coming!" I responded, grabbing a handful of chocolate chips on the way.

"No eating on the job." Mary lightly reprimanded me. "We were supposed to follow that rule?!" I said with mock surprise. "Just don't eat all the sugar, sweetie. Okay?"

Mary had been quick to hire us when we first moved in. She was a lively elderly woman who never did stop smiling. Her son and daughter had gotten new jobs and children of their own, and she had been running the shop on her own for quite some time. She was simply getting too old to do it all on her own. She was happy to hire us and even helped us find our flat.

"No promises" I smiled and popped another chocolate in my mouth. She playfully scolded me. "Well, I have to head home, but I would appreciate you and Nat just keeping the place from burning down until closing time."

"Can do" I hopped onto the counter and swung my feet, careful not to kick the dessert case. "Thank you, my darling."

She was out the door in a matter of minutes after giving simple instructions and grabbing her keys. Nat came from the kitchen just as the front door slammed shut, wiping her hands on her apron.

"Did Mary seriously just leave us with a kitchen full of sweets and nothing important to do?" Nat joined me on the counter. "She expects us to keep the place from falling apart." I explained.

I gave her a warning look. I know that Nat could eat as much cookie dough as I could, and I wanted to stay on Mary's good side.

It was only 3:00, but the shop was lit only by the antique light fixtures. The sun had been completely blacked out by the storm clouds, and it was pouring. I really was not looking forward to getting home in this.
