I walked into school with my head down. Usually, if I didn't do anything noticable, I could just fade into the shadows. Sort of. But not today.
"Hey, Vanessa. Do you need to borrow some cover-up?" Kati yelled.
I, of course, didn't respond.
People sometimes made fun of me because of my looks. My blond hair was dull and impossible to smooth out. I had a severe case if acne that practically never went away. I NEVER wore makeup because despite my physical flaws, I was fine with the way I looked.
The popular crowd had different ideas. Kati and her "friends" just thought that I didn't care about my looks. I wasn't as bad as they were, but I did care. The jocks just thought anyone who wasn't "pretty enough", myself included, was invisible. I thought that they were all stupid and shallow.
I got to class quickly. My science class was filled with jocks and popular girls. I hated it because I was the only one who answered anything. The 45 minute period of science was torture.
"How many pairs of chromosomes do humans have?" Our teacher asked and I timidly raised my hand.
"26." I said quietly.
My voice was super embarrassing. It was scratchy and always cracked. It was the main reason that I barely talked to anyone.
Class went by quickly since we just had to do a worksheet. I left class and went to my locker. I grabbed my things and went to my bus.
When I got home, I got my homework done within an hour. I preferred to isolate myself from other people.
"Puberty, ultimately, hates me." I thought as I fell asleep.
