Chapter 8

I still couldn't get what Cade said out of my mind. And Emma came back to school today, too! I walk out of class and Cade stops me, again.
   "Look Dawn, this is MY relationship. And I will do my best not to hurt Emma, but we need a break." He said.
   "I'm sorry for how I acted earlier, but Emma really likes you... just think about it, okay?" I said.
"I will." He said. How can I go on with my day knowing this and not telling Emma? I walked to my second period, and I knew I was late.
"Finally showed up, Miss Palmer?" Mrs. Fío Se said.
"Sorry... my car is still getting worked on and I had to go with a friend." I lied. Well, some of it is true.
Later that day I was walking out of class. Cade and Emma have been together for just TWO weeks! How can Cade already wanna break up? Things must be going down hill, fast. I don't understand completely... but I hope Emma takes it well. I hope Cade isn't seeing someone else and I hope Emma doesn't find out. I hope Emma doesn't get mad at me. There are so many "I hopes"! But they are all true. I walk all the way to my locker with my head down. I open my locker and get my books out and ready for science. I start walking towards the class and I bump into Emma!
"Hey Dawn, is everything okay with Cade?" She asks me.
"W-what do you mean?" I ask her. I hope she doesn't find out!
"He's been colder and distant, we haven't talked lately, but I hope everything is fine." She says. I bit my lip nervously and really, really, REALLY hoped things between them would get better... like NOW.
"I'm sure everything is fine," I lied. "He loves youuu!" Emma smiled and blushed.
"Me too," she said dreamy. "I've liked him since third grade and we liked each other since then. But we were too shy." I giggled nervously and closed my locker.
"Sooo," I said awkwardly. "Sooo," Emma said laughing.
"Uh, what's your favorite food?" I asked nervously and quickly.
"You know! Pizza!" She said and I laughed. "Well, I better get going, I have Mr. G in five minutes! Bye!" Emma says and she walks away. BANG, BANG, BANG. I hit my head against my locker. What did I just do?! We're best friends and I act like that when there's a secret that she doesn't know about! I'm about to walk to class when I get a text from Megan. What does she want?!
Megan: It would be a shame if Emma found out.
Dawn: What are you talking about?
Megan: I heard everything you and Cade said to each other!
Dawn: Please don't, it would break her heart.
Megan: I won't, on one condition. Meet me in the parking lot after school.
Dawn: Okay.
I run to class and sit down in my seat next to Jaxon. I can't even pay attention to my teacher because I'm so worried! Will Megan tell Emma?! What will Megan make me do?! The bell rings and I walk to my locker to get my books and backpack. I sling my backpack around the shoulder and walk out to the parking lot. I see Megan waiting by my car. I walk up to her.
"I'm here, what do you want?" I ask in a snobby way.
"Well, well, well. I'm surprised you showed up," she said with a smirk. I really wanted to slap her, but she would tell Emma if I did.
"I said I would be here, so I'm here! Now tell me what you want." I say starting to get angry.
"Sheesh, no need to get mad!" She says. I roll my eyes.
"So, I want you to dump Jaxon. If you don't than I will tell Emma that Cade likes you more than her!" Megan said. I can't dump Jaxon! I love- I mean like Jaxon. And also we're not together. "Speechless, huh. I never told anyone but I have a huge crush on Jaxon. And he would be better with me, than he would be with a girl who wears sneakers everyday," she says.
   "B-but Jaxon likes me!" I say with some confidence, but not a lot.
   "I know, so that's why you have to tell Jaxon that you want him to date me," Megan says while picking at her perfectly polished nails.
   "I can't do that!" I say. A teardrop runs down my face but I ignore it.
   "It's either you do what I say, or Emma and Cade are done," she says and crosses her arms like she is some kind of pampered princess.
I didn't know what to do. I love my best friend and if Megan told Emma about that conversation Cade and I had earlier, Emma would be so upset! But if I have to dump Jaxon, and tell him to be with the girl I hate, I will be REALLY upset!! I've liked him ever since fifth grade! I know that Emma and I are besties but what about me?! I have to take care of myself first. But best friends come before boys. I didn't know what to do. I bit my lip and tried hard not to strangle Megan, and thought of my two choices... either tell Jaxon I don't want to be with him or crush Emma... even though I knew which I would do... I still wasn't sure.
   "Well, I have to go get a pedicure so see ya later Fawn," Megan said with an awful smirk. Ugh! What's the matter with her?! Why is she doing this to me?! I never did anything to her! I have too much on my mind! But I still have to make a choice. Even if it hurt me or Emma...
