prologue
"I'd drop the knife if I was you, May. Don't want your pretty mother here bleeding out on the carpet, would you?"
The tone of his voice sounded almost comedic, like he thought this was a joke. I couldn't properly see his entire face from the dim lighting, but I didn't need to see his features to process that he was one sick bastard.
From what I could gather, I had two options. Charge at him with the knife in my quivering hands or place it back onto the kitchen countertop like he asked.
My eyes darted around the scene in front of me at a quick pace, and I was almost prepared to make a run towards him. But it was when my eyes looked into my mothers that I choked, and the knife fell from my fingertips.
She looked petrified, and her eyes almost appeared to be glazed over with fear. She didn't even glance down at the knife pressed against her neck, held onto by the mad man by her side.
"Ah, now that's a good girl." He continued with a laugh, bringing his face closer to my mothers cheek. He brushed his nose over her cheekbones, inhaling her scent like a wolf hunting down its prey.
I watched as she struggled against the man, causing him to press against her neck tighter and release a loud chuckle sounding like that of a maniac. He removed the knife from her neck, only to point it towards me.
"You see your daughter over there? Sweet, innocent, little Maylyn? Well," he began, my mothers eyes drifted up to look at me straight. "Did you know about all the naughty things she's been up to?" He made a 'tsk' repeatedly as he shook the knife around.
"Armed robberies, assault, murder." He finished, his voice dragging out as he completed the list. I stood still, shocked. I'd done bad things, yes. I was in a bad place. I may have been too confident for my own good. I was stupid, and that man didn't deserve to die for my actions.
Her hands began to shake as a tear rolled down her cheek. She never knew of the things that I had done, and I had never planned on changing that. "Is it true?" She choked out with a stutter, still attempting to struggle against the man pinning her down.
"Mom, it's not what you think-" Before I could even explain myself, the psycho of a man cut in- in more ways than one. "Blah, Blah. Too sappy." He shrugged as he sliced the knife across her neck, blood pouring out across the living room carpet.
"No!" I screamed as I rushed towards her body on the ground, coughing as my breathing became ragged from crying. She was spluttering, trying to get enough air into her lungs but she didn't prevail. her jerky movement suddenly stopped, and she went still.
"YOU SON OF A BITCH." I screamed, because it was the only thing I thought I could do. I sprung at him, but in my shocked state he kicked me away with ease.
Only a few tears rolled down my cheeks before my jaw set and my eyes saw red. I went from sadness to hatred, and fear to anger. He saw right through me; he saw my blood boiling under my skin but he didn't care.
I lunged at him again, this time he spun me around so my back was against his chest and he held the bloodied knife against my own neck.
I could feel his lips against my ear and I growled, his smile growing as his voice tickled my neck. "You should learn to have some manners, missy! They don't like potty talk in prison."
I struggled against his tight grip, but before I could reply my attention was drawn to the noise of the front door clicking and the sound of familiar voices echoing through the hallways.
My dad and my brother, Ben.
"You took everything from me, May," he started once more, pressing against my neck harder, "an eye for an eye, I say."
