I held Judith in my arms. I was surprised at how well behaved she was, she actually didn't cry like some kids do when you hold them. Though she stared up at me as I cradled her, I didn't mind much.
I started to pat her back a little, letting her play with my hair, hoping she'd fall asleep. "Can you tell me a little about this place? It's really nice here, I had no idea a place like this was still around."
"Hmm. Let's see," Carl answered as he laid back on the bed board. "My dad and a few others we've been traveling with for a long time sorta found this place one day. We're not the founders, but we did improve it. There was a lady running this whole place awhile back, but things happened. Anyways, my dad's somewhat in charge of this place.." Carl paused for a moment. "Well.. Used to be before that all happened, but I'm sure you wouldn't understand. We'll just save that for another time."
Confused I nodded. I didn't wanna seem nosey, just him talking to me and at least trusting me with that was good enough.
It was a little awkward after that, I guess we still weren't used to one another.
"Your mom? You didn't mention her." Carl suddenly asked.
A nervous chuckle left my throat. "Oh, her. Uh, hah. Never knew her.. She left me with my dad a few months after I was born."
Carl was quiet. "Sorry to hear that."
"No, it's fine, really. From what I've heard from my dad she wasn't that great. She was a bitch honestly."
Carl accidently let out a small laugh. "I didn't expect that. I guess we're somewhat the same then."
I couldn't help but give him a small side smile. "How so?" The aura was kinda getting better between us. I forgot how nice it was to talk to someone.
"My mom was something. Really something." Carl said.
"Well? Where is she?" I asked without possibly thinking about the outcome.
"Dead. She's dead. I shot her before she turned."
I didn't know what to say. It must've been hard for a kid to see that, especially since he had to kill her himself.
"Don't feel sorry, (Y/n). I honestly didn't feel that sad. Yeah, she was my mom, but she wasn't the best at everything. When this all started she was sure that my dad was dead. So she cheated. With my dad's partner and best friend. He used to be a sheriff before all this." I listened to Carl. "I always knew that he was still alive and doing everything he could to find us, but I guess my mom had little hope. Because of that..she got pregnant. Judith, isn't my full sister, but my half. My dad knows this too, but he still loves her like she's his own."
Holding Judith who was now sleeping in my arms I glanced away a bit. He seemed so fine with all of this, I don't know if I would've handled that. "It's amazing how little you're affected by that."
Carl nodded. "Yeah. But I trust you. I'm not sure, but I just feel comfortable with you."
I couldn't help but feel flustered a bit. He trusted me. Not that I was a bad person, but he actually trusted me.
"I guess I should tell you the truth about my family.. I lied about being an only child.. I actually had an older brother.."
