The girl looked up at the night sky, taking in the stars that engulfed her as she stood alone. The street light above her casted a yellowish glow across the sand and pavement where she resided, illuminating the tear streaks on her cheeks.
Her breathing was quiet and gentle as she made her way to the wall of the bridge, climbing up the concrete slope and sitting about halfway up.
A breeze blew contently around her, encircling her body and making her blonde hair sway ever so slightly.
She didn't notice the boy climbing up opposite of where she sat, his intentions to come and cope the same as hers.
The waves at night had a therapeutic toll on those who wandered past, and the pair took pride in knowing they could escape to this secret heaven when things got bad.
The boy sighed almost inaudibly, quietly stepping and making his way to her. The girl kept her gaze straight ahead, squinting to absorb the view of the churning ocean.
She knew he was there and knew he was coming, and another silent tear passed down her porcelain cheek. The boy found his way beside her and sat, not to close yet not to distant.
He wiped a tear from his own cheek. Their breathing became the same, long and hard breaths that became synced together.
The boy looked down, his brow furrowing and biting his lip before clearing his throat and looking back up at the shore a distance away.
"We are in this world alone, Lain." His voice was deep, ragged and lingered in a sort of desperation only those who faced a heart break knew.
No other words were spoken in that moment. The tide rose and the tide fell, leaving the dark sand a soppy shade darker.
The girl lied her head on his shoulder, only allowing her temple and cheek to touch him, fretful to allow herself the pleasure in being close and comfortable with him. He swallowed dryly, putting his arm around her shoulders in a way that had been done plenty of times before.
