Lissa's POV
"They're doing it again."
Layla - my maid - briefly paused from the French braid she was pulling my hair into and glanced at me through the reflection of the mirror standing before us.

"Are you surprised Lissa?"

"No. I lost the ability to do that months ago."

She frowned slightly, knotting a blue ribbon into the braid.

"Honestly, I don't know why they can't drop the subject. The Salvatore family aren't causing any trouble. And your poor mother and father can't handle anymore of the pointless arguments and yelling." Layla huffed, knotting the braid into a wide bun at the base of my neck and with the use of jeweled hair pins, she held it in place.

"They're not the only ones." I mumbled as she fetched a pair of heels from my closet.

"Don't mumble, Allison. I've told you before - its unlady like." She reprimanded from where she was.

I smiled innocently as I picked up a green leather bound book and walked to my bed.

"I'm sorry, Layla. All this noise can make a lady quite.... Crabby."

I could hear her giggle from the closet before saying something about shoes. I bent my head over my book, trying to read but the words kept mixing up with the ones coming from my father's study downstairs.

To understand me better, it is probably best if I start from the beginning.

Long, long ago, in a land far, far away, a kingdom was forged and named Etrigan. Its where I live with my family. Our king - Zenith - has ruled for many years, fair and just. My family are sort of royals - meaning if some disastrous were to happen and the king's family was wiped out, we would be next in line.

My father and mother were the king's closest advisors..... Until a couple months ago when the Salvatores moved to Etrigan. At first, they were ignored for a while. Then king Zenith invited Zachery Salvatore and Emily Salvatore into his royal court. As advisors, to be exact. My parents chose to trust the king's decision, but other ministers of the court didn't.

Hence, the loud voices downstairs.

Personally, I have nothing against the Salvatores - seeing as I've never spoken to them before. But the entire kingdom is shocked - to say the least - at how the king added them to the royal family - because they're strangers. In my opinion, you should at least try to get to know someone before judging them, but clearly, not everyone shared that sentiment.

When reading in my room seemed hopeless, I sighed and said,

"Layla? Can you please fetch me my boots instead of heels and my cloak? I'll just visit Alexa and head to the woods to read."

She nodded and went back to the closet. A few minutes later, I had a pair of beige boots on my feet and a green cloak to match my green dress as I walked downstairs. My black satchel with the royal crest was strung over my shoulder with my book in it.

The arguing stopped as I entered my father's study.

"Ah.... Lissa. You are a vision of beauty as always." One of the ministers said, earning nods of approval and smiles from the others.
