I slowed down my pace, breathing heavily and slumped to the ground. The snow soaked into my pant legs, but I could care less. They were coming, the ones who planned to slaughter me. I shook my head but started as I heard footsteps pounding on the snow. Towards me. Dogs barked, and I could hear the pounding of their paws on the snow packed earth, following the scent of their prey. Me.

"Crap," I muttered as I stood, still winded. I summoned as much energy as I could muster and dove into a nearby bramble bush, ripping my black hair free as the bramble bush snagged it. Cursing under my breath, I stood and ran as fast as I could until I reached a large tree that towered high above my head. The sounds of footsteps faintly and painfully rang in my ears, and I knew I didn't have much time.

With much care, I unfolded my arms, revealing two, squirming puppies. One with snow-white fur, the other with blue-black fur. Both had ice blue piercing eyes. I shed a single year as I looked at them.

"I need you to do exactly as I say," I murmured to them. "Hide in that tree truck until I come back, and stay silent. Got it?" The words came out in a rush, my heart increasing in beat with every second that painfully slips by.

"We understand," Ash answered, the male pup in the group. His white fur shone in the moonlight, and I bit my lip to hold back my tears.

"Good. Take care of each other," I whispered. Carefully, I placed each puppy in the truck and put a rock slab in the front, so the area was completely covered like a cave. As quick as my hands would move, I scrapped mud, twigs, leaves, anything I could get a hold of, onto the slab, making it as natural as possible. Footsteps pound behind me, and I jump up as race for a nearby street.

Running across the road, I feel a piercing pain shoot up my leg. Gunshot. "Crap..." I mutter, rounding a corner. I'm limping and by the time I'm halfway across the shadowed alley, I trip, falling on my face. I spin around onto my back and prop myself up with my elbows to be looking into the end of a gun. With a blast and a forceful wave of air, I feel myself slipping into an everlasting blackness, one more intense than sleep or fatigue. My only hope? That the pups survive.
