Dipper and Mabel left Gravity Falls when they were thirteen, and went back when they were fourteen. Dipper was delighted to be back at work with Ford, and Mabel was ecstatic when she saw Candy and Grenda.

Nothing unusual happened - well, nothing more unusual than normal happened. There was only one thing that occurred towards the end of the summer. Mabel and Dipper both kept having nightmares. Mabel said hers were just pitch black with manic laughter, but Dipper said his were a lot more disturbing. He said that all his friends and family were surrounding him with yellow eyes. He also said that there was a lot of shrieking and screaming, and above it, manic laughter.

Ford seemed to know what was causing the nightmares, and Dipper was sure he knew too. He didn't know how it was possible, since he'd seen that one-eyed demon defeated. But who else could it be?

The only real problem had happened when Mabel and Dipper were getting on the bus to leave. Dipper had seen Bill floating above Ford. As soon as he'd spotted the demon, his left arm had started to burn.
"B-Bill," was all he managed to choke our before Mabel dragged him on to the bus.

When he was on the bus, he looked at his arm and almost fainted. Words had been somehow scratched into his arm;

I know we'll meet again some sunny day.

The message left by Bill was the reason he didn't go back to Gravity Falls for the next summer. He stopped Mabel from going too. Then, the year after that, their parents said they couldn't go because they wanted a family holiday. The year after that was the same. And the year after that.

It was four years until they went back to Gravity Falls. Dipper and Mabel were eighteen. Dipper hadn't forgotten about the message from Bill; but he only had faded memories. Mabel could remember her times with Candy and Grenda, and barely anything else. It was time to go back.

As soon as they got of the hot, rattly bus they were both smothered by people. Wendy, Soos, Candy, Grenda, Grunkle Ford, Grunkle Stan and even Pacifica. There was no sign of Bill, but Dipper knew something was up. Ford kept glancing back at the shack. So did Stan.
"What's up?" Dipper asked Ford quietly. Ford didn't answer him, just ignored him. Dipper frowned.

"Hey, everyone! Let's go back to the Mystery Shack to celebrate the return of Dipper and Mabel!" Stan cried happily, and everyone agreed.

Everyone rushed off, leaving Stan, Ford and Dipper.
"You know," Dipper said quietly, "whatever you're hiding, I'll be able to find it."
He got no response, so he walked off to the Shack.

When he got there, Wendy was standing in front of the door, stopping anyone from entering. Or leaving.
"Guys, you gotta wait until the two Stan's get here!" She yelled over the noise. Dipper sidled up to her.
"Hey," he mumbled.
"Hey man. Missed you," she said, giving him a playful punch. Dipper smiled.
"Thanks. I missed you too. Why aren't you letting us in?" He asked. Wendy looked away.
"Well... there's a new member of staff and... he's, well, he's kind of... different..." she said slowly. Dipper was about to speak when Stan and Ford opened the door.
"How...? You were behind me!" Dipper cried.
"There's a back door, kid," Stan chuckled. "Well, come on in!"

Dipper wanted to see this new member of staff. Why had Wendy been so uncomfortable talking about it?

The first thing he noticed about that Shack was that there were no tourists, which was unusual. But it meant that they had the place to themselves, no other people interrupting the celebration.
"Welcome to the Mystery Shack, home of wonders, dreams and whatever..." a bored voice said. Dipper looked around to see a tanned male with messy golden hair slumped over the counter, eyes closed.
"C'mon, you gotta do better," Stan scolded. "You're lucky that no tourists are here."
"Whatever, Stanley." The male said, without moving. "UGH, this job is so awful."
