All veterinarians know the dangers of zoonotic diseases. They are taught at the very beginning the dangers of diseases like Rabies and Herpes B. They are taught these things in order to to try to keep themselves and the general public aware of the safety issues of pet ownership and animals in general. While there aren't a lot rabid animals roaming the streets now a days, it's not entirely unforeseeable that one day a feral rabid dog could one day cross your path.
However, strange and rare zoonotic diseases can become the bane of exotic pet owners. Especially ones who care for pets improperly or under inadequate and improper conditions.
Even fairly common diseases and parasites can wreak havoc when left unchecked or gone unnoticed in the right conditions.
