Chapter 2

"Two bowls of spaghetti and a bottle of red wine for table 3. Table 12 wants the seafood platter." I yelled as I handed the order to Kevin. The kitchen was chaotic everyone was running around giving orders and running in and out to give people what they wanted. It went on like this every day.

"Thanks Kiddo. Here is the order of table 5." Kevin said handing me a plateau with two bowls of soup. I smiled and skated my way through the kitchen doors. We used roller skates to move around faster but still the restaurant was classy. It was big and often rented out for festivities.

When you walk into the restaurant the first thing that catches the eye is the grand chandelier in the middle right above a small stage that's occupied by some musicians mostly playing classical music with a black piano next to the stage. Welcoming you at the entrance is Linda - the receptionist - who escorts the clients to their table. The tables were covered in red and white clothing with silverware put on each place according to the etiquette. Every table was decorated with a small vase in the middle filled with flowers. It gave the table some character.

I worked at Solo Mio for almost a year now and to be honest I couldn't wait to get out of here. My colleagues were nice but the clients we had were rude, highbrow and filthy rich. The urge to slap a client when they acted like assholes was huge, but I needed the money and this job paid well.

I plastered a bright smile on my face when I got to table 5. "Enjoy your soup." The two men didn't even bother to glance at me or thank me. When I turned around, my smile dropped and I let out an irritated sigh. Just a few hours and I'm done. I chanted in my head. I put my smile back on my face and made my way to a new table occupied by a small family with my notepad in hand. "Hello, welcome to Solo Mio! My name is Hayden and I'll be your waitress for today. Do you know what you want to or-?"

My words died down when I looked up and saw a face I didn't expect to ever see again. He looked drool-worthy in his smart outfit. He wore a dark blue cardigan that complemented his blue eyes and a black dress shirt matching it. He looked surprised when he saw me but quickly covered it up with an amused grin, showing off his dimple. As he raised an eyebrow and said: "Hayden?" I all but blurted "Asshole?"

The woman sitting across him- who looked to be around her early forties- gasped at me and looked stunned at what I said. "Derek? Do you know this unmannered girl?"

Derek. It's been two weeks since I met him and I didn't even bother to learn his name assuming I would never see him again. I still couldn't believe my eyes when I saw him in front of me.

"Really Hayden? Asshole?" Derek chuckled, sounding amused at the nickname I gave him. He totally ignored the lady's question and didn't even bother to acknowledge her. The teenager next to him muffled her laughter. She was beautiful. Unlike Derek she had light brown eyes and fair skin. The girl had long fawn hair that was braided in a fishtail.

My attention moved to the man who cleared his throat and sat next to the woman. I assumed he was his dad and the woman who had called me 'unmannered' his mother. Derek looked like a much younger version of his dad, they had the same blue eyes and sharp jaw. His father radiated authority, making me squirm under his gaze when he looked at me.

"Can you introduce your friend to us, son?" His voice was stern but calm at the same time. The look he gave me was blank as if he was trying to read me, it was just the opposite of how the woman beside him looked at me. She glared at me, not appreciating the nickname I gave her son earlier. Well, I didn't make the best first impression did I?

"This is Hayden, the girl who crashed into me a few weeks back." Derek grinned as he gave me a once-over. "Hayden, this is my sister Samantha..." He patted the girl's head next to him. "And my parents." He then motioned towards his parents across the table.

His father hummed and gave me an amused look. The look he gave me earlier was gone, seeming more laid-back than his wife now. "So this is the girl with the attitude you told me about?" Derek nodded in response as I glared at the Asshole and turned around, skating away.

Attitude? Is he kidding me? I don't have an attitude... Okay I do, but it all was thanks to him.

"Hayden, wait." Someone grabbed my hand, making me turn around to face him. We were around the corner of the kitchen's hall, out of people's view. Derek looked me in the eyes as if he was trying to figure me out. "Why did you run away? Did I do something wrong?"

Why does he care?

I frowned at him, a bit surprised that he actually cared and followed me. "You irritated me." I stated, making him frown in confusion. I sighed and continued. "You told your dad about my attitude? I didn't want to waste my time on questions that your parents would ask me, I have work to do."

Derek chuckled. "You're not great at first impressions, are you? I mean, 'Asshole'?"

I felt my cheeks getting hot in embarrassment. I don't know if he noticed my blush but if he did, he didn't comment on it. "Well, you didn't give me a lot of options, did you? Your first impression wasn't great either."

"Well, you could've named me something more accurate like hottie or sexy beast." He winked and to my surprise I chuckled at that. "Cocky are we?"

Derek gave me this indescribable look. I then noticed that his cold hand was still wrapped around my hand, but I didn't bother letting it go. "When are you done with your shift?"

"Why do you care?" I huffed, frowning.

"Acting difficult again." He stated rolling his eyes but he still seemed amused. "Just tell me."

"At 11pm." I blurted, his blue eyes captivating mine. He smiled at me and let go of my hand saying; "I'll see you then." Derek turned around and walked away. I looked at his retreating form and then he stopped. He glanced over his shoulder giving me a grin.

"Oh yeah, you should smile more often, Sweet cheeks." He winked, making me blush again. Derek then disappeared out of my sight as he made his way back to his table.
